Consumers Energy Recognized by Forbes Magazine as Best Employer for Women in Utility Sector

Consumers Energy has been named the best employer for women in the utility sector and tied for third best employer in Michigan according to a new ranking from Forbes magazine of the best places in America for women to work. As a company committed to leading the way in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Michigan and the utility sector, Consumers Energy also announced a change to their parental leave policy, allowing birthing mothers six months (24 weeks) paid leave, and a four month (16 weeks) paid leave to a nonbirthing parent.
The new leave time can be used for adoption and foster care placements and be taken over a 12-month period. The company is also extending 40 hours of paid medical leave to non-represented, exempt employees, an expansion of a state requirement. The new parental leave policy is included in the 2020 contract negotiated with the company’s largest union, the Michigan State Utility Workers Council, which is subject to ratification by covered members over the coming weeks.... BIRMINGHAM, MI, August 31, 2020-They escaped slavery in Kentucky, following the perilous underground railroad route to gain access to Michigan in the 1850s, settling as farmers in the area before eventually buying a home on Bates Street in Birmingham in 1893. They were active in the United Presbyterian Church and highly regarded by their neighbors. They were also proud to be the first African-American property owners in Birmingham. When George and Eliza Taylor died six months apart in 1901 and 1902, their loss was mourned by the community and they were buried in Greenwood Cemetery. But their graves were not marked, and their story was eventually lost to the passing of time.... Read more

Birmingham to Offer Parks and Recreation Bond Opportunity

BIRMINGHAM, MI, August 19, 2020 - Birmingham voters will consider a Parks and Recreation Bond on the November ballot, which will provide funding to continue the City’s investment in Birmingham parks and recreation facilities. If approved, the City Commission will have permission to move forward with improvements at numerous City parks, playgrounds, the Rouge River trail system, and additional amenities including potentially a pickleball court and splash pad. Projects identified evolved from the Parks & Recreation Master Plan and from community-wide input. The bond will allow for funding to advance these and other projects.... Read more
