BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP PUBLIC LIBRARY ANNOUNCES CHAMBER MUSIC CONCERT

Chamber Music @ Bloomfield Township Public Library is a popular program series at the library.  Please join us for an evening of music on Friday, April 12, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. (after Library hours).

The evening program includes Trio Pathétique in D Minor for Clarinet, Bassoon and Piano by Mikhail Glinka; Contrasts for Clarinet, Violin and Piano, Sz, 111, BB 116 (1938) by Béla Bartók, and much more.

The special talent for this concert includes:

Laura Gamboa has played the violin since age four, and attended the Cleveland Institute of Music where she studied violin performance with Joan Kwuon and David Updegraff and music theory with Dr. Timothy Cutler. She is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Violin Performance as a fellowship recipient at the University of Michigan and has spent five summers at the Aspen Music Festival and School, studying with Naoko Tanaka and Sylvia Rosenberg of the Juilliard School and Cornelia Heard of Vanderbilt University. She has played chamber music with members of the Cleveland Quartet, Brentano Quartet, and Ying Quartet.

Maya Grossman is a Bassoon Performance Major in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at the University of Michigan.  As an Interlochen Arts Academy alumna and current sophomore at U of M, Maya is also in pursuit of a double minor in Performing Arts Management & Entrepreneurship with a minor in Writing.  Maya aspires to be a professional orchestral bassoonist in a major symphony orchestra.

Emily Kao, age 18, is a freshman dual degree student at University of Michigan, studying Cello Performance at the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance with Anthony Elliott, and Computer Science in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. Emily Kao's home state is California, where she studied under Eric Sung in the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College Program. She was the principal cellist at her local youth orchestra, El Camino Youth Symphony (ECYS). She won the concerto competition of ECYS and later performed as a soloist with the orchestra. As a winner of the American Fine Arts Competition and American Protégé, she performed in Carnegie Hall. She has participated in masterclasses by the Peabody Trio and Darrett Adkins. Aside from cello and computer science, Emily enjoys spending time with her family, which includes two adorable dachshunds named Milo and Winston.

Sophia Li, age 18, is a freshman Piano Performance major at the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at the University of Michigan and currently studies piano with Christopher Harding. A Chicago native, Sophia previously studied with Sueanne Metz and has been playing piano since age four. As a winner of the American Fine Arts Festival Russian Concerto Competition, she performed in both Carnegie Hall and with the Kostroma Symphony Orchestra in Moscow, Russia. Sophia has competed in Warsaw, Poland at the Chopin International Youth Competition and performed with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the University of Alicante at Sala dei Notari in Perugia, Italy. Sophia has participated in concert programs at the Skokie Valley Public Library, Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, and the Chicago Cultural Center. Aside from piano, Sophia enjoys playing tennis, writing, and photography.

Cassandra Nielsen is a junior majoring in Clarinet Performance at the University of Michigan where she studies with Daniel Gilbert and Chad Burrow. During her time in Ann Arbor, she has performed in the University of Michigan Symphony Band and Philharmonia Orchestra, and most recently began playing in pit orchestras for various operas such as Viktor Ullmann’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis, as well as the Michigan premieres of William Grant Still’s operas Highway 1, USA and Minette Fontaine. Cassandra is from Long Island, New York, where she studied with Liam Burke. There, she performed with the Stonybrook University Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, the Nassau-Suffolk Wind Symphony, and the Atlantic Wind Symphony. In past summers, she attended the Boston University Tanglewood Institute and the International Music Mastercourses in Cividale, Italy. This summer, she looks forward to attending the Mostly Modern Music Festival in Saratoga, New York.

Nathan Rodriquez is currently a freshman at the University of Michigan. He is from St. Petersburg, FL, and is studying Clarinet Performance, as well as a minor in History. He began studying clarinet at age 11, and instantly fell in love with it. He attended Pinellas County Center for the Arts, receiving opportunities to perform at All-County Band and Orchestra, All-State Band, and competitions including Walkers Rising Stars and Solo and Ensemble. Nathan enjoyed being a member of the Minor Keys, a performing arts group that played at nursing/assisted living homes. He especially liked how this group combined his love for music and desire to help and uplift others. Besides music, he enjoys going out with friends and admiring all types of dogs. He hopes to become a professional Clarinetist in a major orchestra, as well as teach clarinet at major university.

Katie Sesi, age 18, began playing violin at age three and is currently a first-year dual degree Economics and Violin Performance student at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance where she is Concertmaster of the Michigan Pops Orchestra. She made her orchestral debut with the Grosse Pointe Symphony Orchestra, has been a winner of the Rosalie Edwards Youth Music Competition, the American Protégé International Concerto Competition, the Lansing Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, Grosse Pointe Symphony Concerto Competition, the Michigan Pops Concerto Competition, and the Huron High School Concerto Competition. She was twice nominated as an Outstanding Soloist and was chosen as a Michigan Youth Arts Festival Concerto Finalist. She has performed in venues such as The Michigan Theater, Hill Auditorium, and Carnegie Hall and currently studies with Professor Aaron Berofsky.

Yu-Hsuan Wang, a pianist, was born in Taiwan. Ms. Wang’s recent performances include recitals of piano solo and chamber music recitals at Manhattan School of Music in New York. She performed annually in Taiwanese center association in New York from 2015-2018. Yu-Hsuan’s focus on a variety period of piano repertoire includes work by the three B’s of classical musician: Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms to 20th-century composers: Samuel Barber and Charles Griffes. Ms. Wang began her music studies on piano at age six. Besides her major, Ms. Wang is a flutist and had performed in numerous concerts in Taiwan as an orchestra member and chamber ensembles.  A native of Taoyuan, Taiwan, Ms. Wang came to the United States for her music study in 2014. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance at Manhattan School of Music. She studied with Joanne Polk and had been taught by chamber music coach, Jon Klibonoff, and Heasook Rhee. Ms. Wang is currently studying at the University of Michigan for a Master’s Degree in Piano performance with Arthur Greene.

In May 2019, Peiyao Yu is graduating from University of Michigan, School of Music, Theatre & Dance with a 4.0 GPA. Since fall of 2017, she has been pursuing her Masters of Music Degree with Professor Arthur Greene in Piano Performance and also earned a double major in Chamber Music. Currently, she was also learning organ with Professor James Kibbie. This semester, she was invited to join Big Data Project focusing on detailed study of the Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Sonatas. During her Master of Music study, Peiyao Yu has given recitals in Stamps Auditorium, McIntosh Theater, Britton Recital Hall, Bloomfield Township Public Library, “Sala Raffaello” and "Santa Cecilia” Church of Perugia. Previously, Peiyao Yu completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance in Wuhan Conservatory of Music, China. Her principle teachers include Fang Kuang, Jing Wen and Jay Cheng. In 2015, she won the Second Prize of the Yamaha Music Scholarship and was awarded in the Yangtze River Piano Competition.
