SHADES OF PINK FOUNDATION’S ‘A WALK AT THE ZOO’ CALLS ON COMMUNITY FOR SUPPORT

Shades of Pink Foundation (SOPF) "A Walk at the Zoo" is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2024. Set amidst the scenic views of the Detroit Zoo, this much-anticipated family-friendly event aims to bring together more than 3,000 participants to support those undergoing breast cancer treatment in Southeast Michigan by providing prompt funding for everyday living expenses while raising more than $500,000.

"At a time when you’re fighting for your life, you shouldn’t have to worry about how you’re going to keep a roof over your head or make your car payment so you can keep getting to treatment. Recent studies confirm that out-of-pocket expenses for cancer patients are highest for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer,” said Mary Pat Meyers, SOPF board president. “Every single step taken at this event represents a stride towards alleviating the financial burdens of those bravely battling breast cancer and helping to reduce their stress levels while undergoing treatment. Shades of Pink Foundation is deeply committed to our mission and invites the community to join us in making a difference."

Early Bird Registration for the event opened on December 11, 2023. Participants are encouraged to take advantage of last year's pricing until 5 p.m. on February 15, before a $10 increase in registration fees for adults and child/teen tickets.

Pricing:
Adults (18+): $35; $45 after February 15, 5 p.m.
Child/Teen (6-17): $25; $35 after February 15, 5 p.m.

And as always, "A Walk at the Zoo" collectible pin will be available - distributed to the first 1,500 adult registrants who enter the Zoo on April 27.

A Walk with a Difference This walk is not your traditional 5k. Participants can choose a leisurely 1.7-mile route through the Zoo or enjoy the festivities at the Big Top. The event promises a day filled with entertainment, vendors, snacks, raffle baskets, kid's activities, and more.

Each year more than 8,000 Michigan residents are diagnosed with breast cancer. Of those diagnosed:

  •  3,200 will face significant difficulty paying healthcare costs.
  • 2,640 will have problems affording necessary cancer medications, forcing 1,840 patients to cut pills in half or skip doses.
  • 2,000 will use up all their personal savings for medical bills and 800 will be forced to file for bankruptcy.

In 2023, SOPF distributed more than $350,000 to breast cancer patients in need. Both funds raised and individuals served have continued to increase in recent years. This all thanks to the ongoing support of SOPF’s major donors, sponsors and volunteers who have an unwavering commitment to the foundation and those it serves.
