Job Description 

Summary/objective

The School Nurse/ Medical Librarian will be responsible for overseeing the medical library, acting in the capacity of school nurse and clinical skills test evaluator at Great Plains Technology Center.

 

Essential functions

  • First Responder to health and emergency needs campus wide
  • Maintain first aid room and inventory
  • Maintain emergency equipment
  • American Heart Association Local Site Manager for CPR
  • Update and refresh first aid kits and supplies school wide
  • Administer the LTCNA/HHA Oklahoma State Certification Clinical Skills tests
  • Proctor testing to include: make-up exams, HOSA and adult program needs
  • Catalog books and maintain library
  • Maintain inventory and periodic reports
  • Maintain library materials, books and magazines to accreditation standards
  • Follow up of overdue books
  • Assist students with research projects, computer software problems, library study and medical remediation needs
  • Assist faculty in research and information needs
  • Assist health programs with lab, first aid, and CPR check off skills
  • Assist with student supervision
  • Substitute teach as schedule allows
  • Scan the records of GPTC student into student record database
  • Maintain accurate inventory

Competencies

Clinical Care: Possess strong clinical skills to provide direct care to students. This includes conducting health assessments, managing acute illnesses and injuries, and monitoring chronic conditions. The ability to perform basic medical procedures such as first aid, wound care, and CPR is essential.

Assessment and Screening: Conduct health screenings and assessments to identify health concerns and trends within the student population. This may involve vision and hearing screenings, growth monitoring, mental health assessments, and screenings for communicable diseases. Must be skilled in using assessment tools and interpreting results to inform health interventions and referrals.

Collaboration and Communication: Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills are necessary to build trust, facilitate teamwork, and convey health information effectively.

Emergency Response: Must be prepared to respond to medical emergencies that occur on school grounds. This includes assessing and stabilizing patients, initiating emergency protocols, and coordinating with emergency medical services as needed. Competencies in emergency preparedness, including CPR, AED usage, and first aid, are critical for ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff.

Legal and Ethical Considerations: Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards related to student health and confidentiality, including HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliance.

None

 

Work environment

The school nurse typically works in an office environment or assisting students in the classrooms for medical assessment. The mission of the school may require work in other settings including outdoors. A standard workweek as assigned by administration is required, but evening or weekend hours may be required to accommodate activities.

 

Physical demands

While performing the duties of this position, the school nurse is frequently required move/position objects up to 50 pounds, move about the medical library and/or across campus and may need to be able to lift/move students during care. The school nurse may respond to emergency situations, student altercations and communicate with staff, parents and students. The school nurse may be required to perform extensive work at a computer display terminal.

 

Travel required

Occasional travel within and outside of the Great Plains Technology Center district may be required for professional development and participation in other Great Plains Technology Center activities.

 

Required education and experience

  • Current Registered Nurse License
  • Associate degree
  • One year of experience in industry
  • Current CPR Instructor Certification
  • Clinical Skills Evaluator Certification

Preferred education and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree
