    Golf Tournament to Benefit Meals on Wheels

    Golf Tournament to Benefit Meals on Wheels
    MAC Inc., the Area Agency on Aging, will sponsor a golf tournament on Wednesday, May 19, at Nutters Crossing Golf Course in Salisbury.
    Proceeds will benefit MAC’s home-delivered meals program (Meals on Wheels).
    Registration begins at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Lunch and awards ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded.
    The cost is $400 per team of four; register by March 31 for a $50 discount.

    General Membership Luncheon

    Anthony Darby began his medical cannabis career in 2015 when he and his three partners set out to introduce medical cannabis to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. As the first and largest dispensary on Eastern Shore, Darby and his team aimed to change the face of the industry and provide alternative medicine to patients who could benefit from safe access to quality cannabis.

    As the CEO of Peninsula Alternative Health, Darby helped lead the launch of the dispensary and currently oversees all facets of the business, including operations, vendor and community relations, and managing the dispensary team.

    In 2017, the Peninsula Alternative Health team launched Peninsula Holistics, and the Peninsula Wellness campus in 2020, with Darby serving as CEO. The Peninsula team is currently working on several projects outside the state of Maryland, and moving forward; Peninsula will continue its expansion, focusing on the mid-Atlantic region.

    MAC, Inc., the Area Agency on Agency, is hosting a virtual Alzheimer’s and Dementia Caregivers Conference, “Compassionate Care During Challenging Times,” on Wednesday, May 26, from 8:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
    This virtual conference is designed to empower caregivers and health care professionals with strategies, inspiration and resources that will bolster efforts to care for those with Alzheimer’s or dementia during these truly challenging times. 
       Keynote Speaker Dr. Steven Sabat, author and professor emeritus of Psychology at Georgetown University, will explore “Improving Communications with People Living with Dementia: The Role of Supporting Personhood.”

    Maryland Redistricting Reform Luncheon

    In January of 2021, Governor Hogan issued an Executive Order establishing the Maryland Citizens Redistricting Commission. The assignment is to redraw Congressional as well as General Assembly district maps that will guide representation of legislative officials for the next decade.

    The Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce will host a special luncheon on the campus of Salisbury University on June 3, 2021 at 11:30AM, featuring Walter Olson, Co-Chair, Maryland Redistricting Commission.

    Mr. Walter Olson is a Senior Fellow of the Cato Institute, a think tank in Washington D.C. Mr. Olson is an author, has testified before the United States Congress, has written articles for publications such as The Wall Street Journal and New York Times. His work on Tort Reform has often been discussed in the press and has been cited in court opinions. Olson has written about redistricting and gerrymandering.

    In 2015, Olson was appointed by Governor Hogan as co-chair of the Maryland Redistricting Commission, which issues recommendations later that year for comprehensive reform. 

    The commission’s recommendations served as a basis for legislation Hogan has introduced since then in the Maryland legislature. Mr. Olson will speak about the current work of the Redistricting Commission and its potential impacts locally and Statewide.    

    Tickets are $25 for members, $35 for future members.

    Aging into Medicare class

    If you are getting ready to turn 65 in the next 6 months, or will be going on Medicare soon, MAC’s “Aging Into Medicare” class is for you!

    Classes will be held in person at MAC on Friday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to noon. Registration is required and class size is limited.

    Turning age 65 is a time when major Medicare planning takes place. These sessions will provide you with the information needed to make the right decisions for you. Discussion will include how Medicare works, what it covers, and how and when to apply.

    As of June 1, those who are fully vaccinated are not required to wear a mask while visiting the MAC building; those who have not been fully vaccinated are asked to continue wearing a mask.

    A tradition for more than 50 years, children are invited to see what they can catch at Wicomico County Recreation & Parks’ Youth Fishing Derby. The Department of Natural Resources will add hundreds of blue gills to the pond’s current inhabitants. Bring your own bait and rod. Snacks and drinks will be provided for youth participants.

    Prizes will be awarded in categories including, but not limited to: Most Fish Caught, Most Unusual Catch and Biggest Fish.
