If you are getting ready to turn 65 in the next 6 months or will be going on Medicare soon, MAC’s new class, “Aging Into Medicare,” is for you!

Discussion will include how Medicare works, what it covers and when to apply. The free classes are open to anyone who wishes to attend. Classes will be repeated on a regular basis.

The next class will be held Thursday, Sept. 12, from 1-3 p.m.

Wicomico Goes Purple in September - National Recovery Month

Wicomico Goes Purple is a collaboration between the Wicomico County Opioid Intervention Team and the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore.

This campaign strives to initiate conversations about the dangers of substance misuse and abuse and focuses on prevention, treatment and recovery resources available throughout our community.

Join us for the September General Membership Luncheon featuring Lori Brewster, Chief Health Officer for the Wicomico County Health Department.

Ms. Brewster's presentation regarding the Lower Eastern Shore opioid and addiction crisis will provide current data and answers to questions such as:

 

  • What is the issue?
  • Who is at risk?
  • Why are overdose deaths increasing?
  • What is the impact of the opioid crisis on our community?
  • What are we doing to address the issue?
  •  

    Lori Brewster has served as Wicomico County's Health Officer since 2008. She is responsible for oversight and management of public health programs, assessment, planning and service monitoring. Brewster earned a Bachelor of Science from Salisbury University and a Master of Science in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing from the University of Maryland.

    Second Bi-Annual Deaf-Blind Conference on preparedness across the lifespan for Deaf-Blind individuals.

    Friday, September 20, 2019, conference begins with breakfast for all attendees at 8:00 a.m.

    Pemberton 24 - Festival of 5Ks

    How many 5Ks can you run in 24 hours? Find out at the Pemberton 24 - Festival of 5Ks, a new event that will be held from Friday-Saturday, Sept. 20-21. A  5K will start every hour on the hour for 24 hours. Runners can complete up to a total of 75 miles.

    The first 5K begins at 7 p.m. Friday, and the grounds open at 4 p.m. that day. 

    This event is a partnership between Wicomico County Recreation, Parks & Tourism and Algonquin Ultras Inc.

    Participants are invited to run as many 5Ks as they like, whether it's one, five or all 24.

    The course will be a 5K trail run at Pemberton Park. Camping will be available. Tents only; no electricity provided. There will also be a festival atmosphere, with food vendors, beer and music.

    Runners can compete as individuals or as part of a four-person team.

    The deadline to guarantee a shirt, upgrade to a long-sleeved shirt or reserve a camping spot is Aug. 31.

    Bingomania

    Bingomania
    Bingomania, the Eastern Shore’s largest bingo cash prize event, returns to the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center on Saturday, Sept. 21. Doors open at 5 p.m. for early bird games, and regular games begin at 7:30 p.m. 

    Admission to Bingomania includes all regular and special games, including the Jumbo Jackpot Game. Regular game payouts are $500, while special games will pay out $1,000. The Jumbo Jackpot Game pays a maximum of $10,000 depending upon attendance. Attendees must be 18 or older.

    Increase your chances of winning and help a local food bank at the same time by bringing three nonperishable food items to the event. Those who do will receive three additional cards for the first early bird game.

    Tickets are $45 per person in advance and $55 per person at the door; fees may apply to ticket prices. All proceeds benefit the Mardela Middle and High School Bands.

    There are 10 early bird games starting at 6 p.m. Early bird games are $1 for one card or $5 for six cards.
