Frederik Meijer, who founded the first Meijer supermarket in 1934 with his father, always said he wanted to leave the world “in a little better shape” that when he entered it.

Along with asking customers to support worthy causes, Meijer also encourages employees to give back to their community with the annual Meijer Team Gives program. The concept is to empower store team members to support organizations that are meaningful to them. Each store and distribution facility awards one local nonprofit $10,000 or a split into two $5,000 gifts.

Earlier this month, Meijer employees at the Marketplace Circle store in Rochester Hills, selected Assistance League of Southeast Michigan to receive $10,000 from the retailer's Meijer Team Gives program to help fund the chapter’s signature philanthropic program, Operation School Bell.

The OSB program has helped thousands of area children succeed by providing new school clothing and health assistance.

In addition to Operation School Bell, the chapter's philanthropic programs include Wee Help for infants, Assault Survivor Kits for victims of abuse and Nourishing Neighbors for those with food insecurity.
