Overland Park, KS – Johnson County Library hosts its annual Women & Money Day on Saturday, Oct. 12, bringing together dynamic speakers and local women to encourage financial literacy with a series of special programs and activities. The keynote speaker is Helaine Olen, Washington Post columnist and co-author of bestselling book “The Index Card.” Olen’s top tips, which inspired her book, are included below.

On average, women have only one-third the retirement savings of men, yet half of women manage their family’s finances. Attendees will learn the basics of personal finance and steps to gain financial stability, knowledge and confidence. Library staff will also share the many no-cost resources available at Johnson County Library, including career resources, MakerSpace tools and capabilities, and entertainment for those on a budget.

Helaine Olen’s top tips for women and finance, which famously fit on one “Index Card”:

o   Max your 401(k) or equivalent employee contribution

o   Buy inexpensive, well-diversified mutual funds

o   Never buy or sell an individual security

o   Save 20% of your money

o   Pay your credit card balance in full every month

o   Maximize tax-advantaged savings vehicles like Roth, SEP and 529 accounts

o   Pay attention to fees – avoid actively managed funds

o   Make financial advisors commit to a fiduciary standard

o   Promote social insurance programs to help people when things go wrong

Presented in partnership with Housing & Credit Counseling, Inc (HCCI) and sponsored by Mainstreet Credit Union and the Bank of Blue Valley.
