The City of Merriam Community Development Department is seeking a full-time Planner. This position is responsible for supporting the City of Merriam’s mission by serving in a strong customer-oriented capacity, as well as performing a variety of technical and research tasks as they relate to the Community Development department. The qualified applicant will focus on short and long-term planning initiatives in the areas of land use, commercial development, and economic development. He/she will review and research all site plans that go before the Planning Board. Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: processing applications for rezoning and special uses, Board of Zoning Appeals, and sign permits, providing information to the public regarding cases under public review, drafting and presenting staff reports, and assists in the construction permitting function. Will perform other duties as assigned. 

Requirements:  
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4-year degree from a university or college with a degree in planning, civil engineering, landscape architecture, architecture-or other related field; or equivalent work experience in a related field

  • Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record, or ability to obtain a license

  • Ability to communicate with the public, including to deliver adverse news in a concise manner;

  • Ability to interpret site plans, maps, architectural plans, specifications, and legal documents

  • Ability to read and interpret codes, maneuver in an active construction site, and navigate databases and applications effectively;

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
