Local teen inspired by pandemic, donates to Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital
When her high school shifted to virtual learning in March, Sydney Mathew, a sophomore at Shadow Creek High School, began writing poetry for her English class. Her poems focused on how the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine were affecting her friends and family. The creative outlet allowed her to put her thoughts, feelings and emotions into words. The feedback was so good that she decided to publish a poetry book, Corona Diaries.
Sydney donated her first royalty check to Memorial Hermann Southeast to recognize healthcare workers for their hard work and dedication during the current crisis. Her donation helped purchase additional personal protective equipment for nurses and staff working in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
