WellSpan Health this month officially welcomed Roxanna L. Gapstur, Ph.D., R.N. as the regional health system’s new president and chief executive officer.

Gapstur started in her position Jan. 2, becoming WellSpan’s third president and CEO since the health system was formed nearly two decades ago. She succeeds Kevin H. Mosser, M.D., who retired on Jan. 1.

“I am proud to be the next president and CEO of WellSpan Health, and I look forward to creating strong connections across our organization and in the communities we serve,” Gapstur said.

“WellSpan’s focus on creating value and improving the health of our friends and neighbors in central Pennsylvania won’t change,” she added. “We want to continue to be the first choice for health care in our communities through exceptional experience, affordable care and high levels of quality and safety.”

Gapstur was appointed to her new role in September 2018 by the WellSpan Health Board of Directors, following a national search.

She is a native of Minnesota and most recently served as president of Methodist Hospital and senior vice president of HealthPartners, a $7.2 billion, Minnesota-based integrated health plan and care delivery organization that includes eight hospitals, 1,800 employed physicians and more than 100 care locations. Her previous positions at HealthPartners have included Chief Operating Officer, Methodist Hospital, and Vice President, Patient Care Services/Chief Nursing Officer, Park Nicollet.

As a senior vice president at HealthPartners, Gapstur played an instrumental role in supporting the growth of the organization in the western Minnesota market through regional expansion of specialty care, post-acute partnerships and operational leadership of care management strategies for high-risk populations. She also served as one of the executive sponsors of quality improvement across six hospitals. Gapstur holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, Minn.; a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Minnesota; and a doctorate in nursing from the University of Minnesota.
