The president of Harrisburg Area Community College has been elected to a top post at a membership association for Pennsylvania's community colleges.

Dr. John "Ski" Sygielski was elected vice chairman of the board of directors for the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges during its annual meeting, held in Harrisburg on April 3.

The commission is a voluntary membership association for Pennsylvania’s community colleges, and its members include college presidents, members of the colleges' boards of trustees and key administrators.

Sygielski, who begins his first term as a member of the commission board, became the seventh president of HACC in July 2011.

He has served as president of Oregon's Mt. Hood Community College and Virginia's Lord Fairfax Community College.

He also is a member of the Harrisburg Rotary Club and serves on the boards of the Harrisburg Boys and Girls Club, Harrisburg Chamber of Commerce and the Pennsylvania Workforce Investment Board.

Named chairman of the community college organization's board was Stephanie Shanblatt, president of Bucks County Community College.
