Many of PC users realize that it can be a pain, and not to mention very costly, to upgrade not only a computer but a network of computers also. So it may come to a shock that you can have Windows 7 or Windows 8 of any version except Enterprise license and be able to upgrade at no cost whatsoever! Microsoft is attempting to unify the operating systems that are out on the market so that it standardizes what ways it provides support and also to ensure end users are not at security risk by running even Windows 7 and yes believe it or not Windows 8. So a little work is required on your part to make this happen:

  • Make sure you have all known Windows Updates for your PC(s): Once you have all updates this will ensure that you can have a smoother upgrade process.
  • Make sure you reserve your spot: Once you complete all the updates check your lower right-hand part of your desktop (taskbar) you should see a white windows logo. If you do not see it after windows updates you can also go to the following Microsoft webpage to reserve your free copy: http://www.microsoft.com/EN-US/windows.
  • Be prepared for a 3 - 4 GB download: Yes, it's a large download but you're not getting a patch or service pack, you are getting an updated operating system, Windows 10. Depending on your computer you want to allot approximately one to two hours for the whole process to complete.

Of course if you're reading this article then you're a Lebanon Valley Chamber of Commerce member like I am and you are entitled to a free hour of computer service! So you have a free upgrade and a free hour of service at your disposal!

I have already beta tested Windows 10 as a Microsoft Partner and can also tell you that upon many requests that the "Start" button is officially back on the desktop. I will also encourage you to contact your software companies that you run your specialized software for your business through before upgrading to make sure that your software will run properly on Windows 10. If you have questions on this or anything else, feel free to contact me.
