The City of Ridgeland, the Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce and Ridgeland Tourism Commission lends their support to the 8th Annual Small Business Saturday® and Shop Small® Movement to drive commerce to small businesses.

The City of Ridgeland has declared its support in this year’s Small Business Saturday, taking place on November 25 with a proclamation signed by Mayor Gene McGee. Small Business Saturday is a day dedicated to supporting local small businesses and strengthening and celebrating communities across the country. Seeking to enhance promotion of the event, the City has partnered with the Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce and the Ridgeland Tourism Commission.

The City of Ridgeland, the Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce and the Ridgeland Tourism Commission have created a webpage at www.ridgelandchamber.com/shopsmall for the sharing of local business discounts, sales and promotions planned by small local businesses for November 25. Local merchants are encouraged to contact the Ridgeland Chamber to have their promotions listed on the webpage. Marketing materials for the event are available to businesses through www.ShopSmall.com .

Shop Local- Buy Local Small Business Saturday banners will be strategically placed at intersections in Ridgeland to help promote the event. An advertising campaign will utilize billboards and social media.

“Our locally owned small businesses are the backbone of Ridgeland,” said Ridgeland Mayor Gene McGee. “Small retail stores provide character and charm and their presence contributes to the uniqueness of Ridgeland. Many of them are owned by Ridgeland residents and we want them to grow in prosperity here. Our aim is to show the local businesses exceptional support by promoting the concept of Shop Small to citizens and visitors.”

Created by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday serves as the ceremonial kickoff to the holiday shopping season for small businesses across the United States. In 2016, an estimated 112 million consumers reported shopping at small businesses on Small Business Saturday, according to the 2016 Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey.1 The day was also championed by elected officials in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

“Small Business Saturday, scheduled this year for November 25, celebrates the spirit of enterprise and entrepreneurship, as exemplified by small business owners who take the risk of following their dreams,” said Linda Bynum, Executive Director of the Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce.  “Originated in 2010, this nationwide ‘Shop Small’ campaign is an effort to encourage shoppers to patronize small, local businesses for their holiday shopping. We believe ‘Shop Small’ helps spark the groundswell of enthusiasm for shopping locally. And, why not? There are so many benefits to our community to keeping it local. The Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce is proud to partner with the City of Ridgeland and the Ridgeland Tourism Commission to support this special day celebrating the small businesses that play a vital role in creating jobs and economic opportunities across our state. When small businesses succeed, we all succeed.”

Small Business Saturday celebrates the diversity of small businesses across the U.S. and the City of Ridgeland recognizes the importance of supporting small businesses, the jobs they help create, and the culture they instill in local communities.  According to the U.S. Small Businesses Administration, as of 2014, small businesses nationwide accounted for 63% of net new private-sector jobs created and represented 99.7% of firms with paid employees.2
