RIDGELAND, Miss.--“Chalk at the Trace” on Saturday May 13th,10:00AM-3:00PM,  promises to be a fun, free, family event for all ages. Hosted by the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi, creative chalk drawings will take shape throughout the day at the Mississippi Craft Center, 950 Rice Rd, Ridgeland, MS 39157. All skill levels, individuals, and teams are invited to grab some sidewalk chalk and join in the fun.  Stroll around to see the chalk artwork, visit the gallery which will be open 9:00AM-5:00PM, and take a short hike or bike ride on the Natchez Trace multipurpose trails that are accessible from the Mississippi Craft Center through the new boardwalk.

The craft of street painting has its roots in 16th century Italy. When artists who decorated the interior of the grand churches were finished with a project, they would take to the streets and recreate the art in chalk for tips from the public. Today, Madonnari art can be of anything ranging from 3-D optical illusions to anything you can imagine.

This event is free. There will be a free chalk swap and a limited supply of children’s sidewalk chalk available for purchase for $1/pack if you do not bring your own. All ages and skill levels are welcome to join in, and groups are encouraged to create together. An adult must accompany children under 16, and there should be at least one adult per every five children. To learn more about suggested supplies to bring if you want to get serious about creating with sidewalk chalk, and for more information about this event visit , , or call 601-856-7546.
