Westminster, MD
04/26/2017 11:58 AM

Approximately 2,500 middle and high school students from Carroll County Public Schools will have the opportunity to attend the 3rd annual Carroll County Drug and Violence Awareness Expo on Thursday, April 27, 2017. The Expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carroll Ag Center, located at 700 Ag Center Drive in Westminster.

The Expo is being sponsored by the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce and local businesses and will feature speakers, demonstrations, and vendors, all with the common goal of promoting a message of awareness to the community and students. Speakers will include Carroll County State’s Attorney Brian DeLeonardo, Drug Treatment and Education Liaison Tim Weber, and parent advocate Beth Schmidt.

Sessions will be held on topics including National Prevention Week, prescription drug abuse, personal character traits, and domestic violence. There also will be demonstrations on the Sheriff Department’s K-9 Unit, CPR, and self-defense, along with a number of displays and exhibitors.

So far in 2017, Carroll County has already had over 90 drug overdoses. The impact of these overdoses is reaching many of the county’s neighborhoods and students. That is why the school system believes so strongly in education students on the dangers of high risk behaviors such as drug use and providing them with community resources that are available to assist them, their families, and their friends.
