Kansas City’s annual Web.com Tour event renamed KC Golf Classic Tournament to return for ninth year at Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate with new name
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Web.com Tour and the Kansas City Crusaders announced today that the longstanding Tour event, contested annually at the Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate, will be renamed the KC Golf Classic, effective immediately. The 2018 event is set to be contested the week of July 30-August 5.
The tournament, which debuted in 2009 on the Web.com Tour schedule, will continue to be operated by the Kansas City Crusaders. The popular area event, led by Executive Director Drew Van Meeteren, will work through the local business community to secure a title sponsor for the 2018 tournament and moving forward.
“We are committed to the greater Kansas City market and eager to work with the community to continue building the foundation for the KC Golf Classic,” said Van Meeteren. “This tournament has become a premier event on the annual sports calendar, and we will work with business leaders throughout this great market to ensure a successful tenure for years to come.”
The tournament has been one of the most popular events on the Web.com Tour schedule over the past eight years, producing a bevy of impressive champions in a short period of time.
Australian Michael Sim claimed the inaugural event in 2009 on his way to the Tour’s Three-Victory Promotion to the PGA TOUR, as well as a record-setting campaign in which he set the Web.com Tour’s all-time single-season earnings mark with $644,142 before being named Player of the Year later that fall.
Like Sim, Wesley Bryan claimed the 2016 edition for the third of three wins on the season, earning the Three-Victory Promotion before being named Player of the Year in November.
In 2017, the tournament produced a watershed moment in golf history when champion Zecheng “Marty” Dou became the first Chinese-born player to secure a PGA TOUR card. Dou was one of two Chinese
players on the Web.com Tour last year to earn TOUR status, joining fellow countryman Xinjun Zhang with the honor.
