Renaissance at Colony Park to Hold E-Waste Recycling for Earth Day
Ridgeland, MS
04/20/2021 10:52 AM
On April 22, 2021, in celebration of Earth Day, Renaissance at Colony Park and NexTech will join together to offer local residents a way to dispose of their old computers, televisions, cell phones, etc., in an E-Waste Recycling Day to be held at Renaissance at Colony Park.

The event, sponsored by Renaissance and Pearl, MS-based NexTech which provides IT disposal services to businesses, is aimed at raising awareness of the need to responsibly dispose of E-Waste. Disposing of E-Waste/used tech products is a huge challenge, as those items pose harm to the environment and also present a risk for exposing the owner’s personal information. Since e-waste should not be thrown into regular trash, most people struggle to find a safe and responsible solution.

Jan Mattiace, Renaissance spokesperson said, “It’s important to Renaissance to honor our environment and our community. As a part of that philosophy, we’re happy to have the opportunity to partner with NexTech to offer our community a way to safely and responsibly dispose of their unwanted tech products.”

Brad Cohen, NexTech CEO, commented, “When people think of household waste, they usually picture typical trash and maybe plastics and paper for recycling but they often overlook the fastest-growing municipal waste stream in America which is electronic waste - what we call E- Waste.” Cohen added, “It seems that everyone has E-Waste lying around in a drawer or closet because they don’t know what to do with it. Many thanks to Renaissance at Colony Park for helping raise awareness of this issue and for sponsoring this recycling event where residents may bring their E-Waste for disposal.”

About E-Waste

E-Waste is defined as discarded electronics, including TVs, computers, peripherals (printers, scanners, fax machines, copiers, mice, keyboards) and cell phones. Representing 2% of America’s trash in landfills, E-Waste equals 70% of overall toxic waste because the hazardous materials it contains. It is a huge and ever-growing problem. Unaware of a solution for disposing of old electronics, people keep it and it sits for years - to the tune of 42 pounds of E-Waste produced by each person annually to equal nearly 12 million pounds in the United States. Currently, only 12% of E-Waste is recycled, which means that, literally, tons of toxic E-Waste is improperly disposed of, thereby negatively impacting the environment by contaminating the air, water and land. Both of these problems - data breaches and contamination - can be easily avoided by simply taking E-Waste to a certified recycling facility.
