CHAMBER MUSIC CONCERT
Bloomfield Township, MI—March 18, 2019
Chamber Music @ Bloomfield Township Public Library is a popular program series at the library. Please join us for an evening of music on Friday, March 22, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. (after Library hours).
The evening program includes Prélude, Récitatif et Variations pour Flu^te, Alto et Piano, Op. 3 by Maurice Duruflé; Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano in E Minor, Op. 67 by Dmitri Shostakovich; Quartet for Piano, clarinet, violin, cello and piano, Op. 1 by Walter Rabl, and much more.
The special talent for this concert includes:
Sean Anderson is a junior at University of Michigan studying
Horn Performance and Cognitive Science. His academic interests lie at the
intersections between artificial intelligence and musical creativity. And he
has a dog.
Rachel Berkowitz is currently pursuing her Master of Public Health
in Epidemiology at the University of Michigan, School of Public Health. She is
a recent alumna of the University of Michigan, graduating in 2017 with a
Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance and a Bachelor of Science in
Neuroscience. Rachel's primary teachers were Amy Porter, flute professor at the
University of Michigan, School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and Jeff Zook,
Detroit Symphony Orchestra piccoloist.
Peter Ecklund is an Ann Arbor-based bassoonist and young professional musician. In his third year at the University of Michigan, School of Music Theater and Dance, Peter studies with Jeffrey Lyman and performs regularly with the University Symphony Orchestra. He grew up in East Lansing and spent his summers at Interlochen Arts Camp where he was inspired by other aspiring artists from around the world. Some of his favorite Interlochen memories include playing principal bassoon under the direction of JoAnn Falletta with a section of now lifelong friends. At Michigan, Peter has performed with the Symphony Band, including recording the Bolcom trombone concerto with Joe Alessi, as well as the University Symphony Orchestra. An active chamber musician, Peter has performed with many woodwind quintets, focusing on works by Hindemith, Ligeti, Barber, and Danzi among others. He has collaborated with Chamber Music Michigan to play Mozart’s Gran Partita. Peter
currently holds a teaching position with the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra.
He takes inspiration from many of his former teachers: David Fitts, Keith
Buncke, George Sakakeeny, and Billy Short. Peter enjoys sharing his love
of classical music with audiences across Michigan. In his spare time, Peter
loves to travel, run, and learn languages.
Forrest Howell is a doctoral student in Piano Performance and
Pedagogy at the University of Michigan, School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
His primary teachers include Logan Skelton and Irene Peery-Fox. He has
performed across the United States as both a soloist and as the pianist of the
Timpanogos Trio. Recently, he performed with Lea Salonga in the Cultural Center
of the Philippines.
Mickenna Keller is currently a junior receiving her Bachelor of Music in Music Performance at the University of Michigan where she studies with Dr. Nancy Ambrose King. In conjunction with oboe, she is also working towards a minor in History of Art. At Michigan, she plays with the University Symphony Orchestra. In past summers she has attended the Interlochen Arts Camp, the Eastern Music Festival, and the NSO’s Summer Music Institute. She also has a dog named Bella!
Originally from San
Jose, California, Leo Kim is in the first year of his Master’s Degree in Clarinet at the University of Michigan. He also completed his Bachelor’s Degree at Michigan in 2018. At Michigan, he studies with Chad Burrow and Dan Gilbert and is active in both the band and orchestra programs. In his free time, he enjoys a nice cup of coffee, watching Netflix shows, and he also has a dog.
Ryan Koesterer is currently a graduate student at the University
of Michigan. He serves in the 126th Army band in Belmont, Michigan. Ryan
received his Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance from the University of
Missouri. And he has a dog.
Born in China, Xinzhu
Ma was accepted into the Pre-college Division of the Shenyang Conservatory
of Music when she was 11 years old and made her debut at the age of 13.
Xinzhu received a full scholarship from Capital University and studied with
Tianshu Wang. After graduation, she received a merit scholarship to come
and study with Arthur Greene at the University of Michigan. After winning the
Women in Music Concerto Competition at Columbus, Ohio, she appeared with the
McConnell Chamber Orchestra, Capital Sumphonic Winds and Cirtuosi Brunenses
Orchestra and has performed in the United States, Italy, England and China.
Educated at New England Conservatory and the University of Michigan,
Ms. Yuting Ma began her piano study at the age of five in her native
country of China. She has received awards including first prize in the New York
International Piano Competition in 2014 and was a finalist of the Tulsa
International Piano Competition in 2013. She has performed as a soloist and
chamber musician both in China, the United States, and Canada. Ms. Ma also won
the first prize of St. Andrew Concerto Competition and performed with the St.
Andrew Orchestra in 2014. She has finished her undergraduate and master
degree at New England Conservatory and studied with Ms. Vivian Hornik
Weilerstein. She is now a first year DMA student in Piano Performance
Major at the University of Michigan studying with Professor Arthur Greene.
A native of upstate New York, Ben
Pochily earned a Bachelor of Music Degree from the Eastman School of Music with George Taylor and is currently pursuing a master’s degree with Yizhak Schotten at the University of Michigan. An avid orchestral musician, he is a member of the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the Traverse Symphony Orchestra and the National Repertory Orchestra. A fan of contemporary music, he has appeared with the University of Michigan’s Contemporary Directions Ensemble and Eastman’s Musica Nova. He can also occasionally be found moonlighting as a mediocre pianist or a truly atrocious French horn player. In addition to his musical activities, he has intermittently pursued a career as a software engineer, most recently working at Pivotal Labs Chicago.
Sophia
Rightmer, a freshman at the
University of Michigan, is pursuing a degree in Cello Performance within
the School of Music, Theater, and Design (SMTD) with Professor Richard Aaron,
while also pursuing an undecided major in the School of Literature, Science,
and the Arts (LSA). Throughout her high school career, Sophia has participated in numerous national music camps,
won multiple competitions, and soloed with several orchestras. Though
officially undecided in her minor, Sophia has a deep passion for academics. She was a winner of the National Colonial Dames of America’s National Essay Contest, and gained the opportunity to visit Washington D.C. on full scholarship for their Congressional Seminar Program.
Hanna Rumora’s love for the cello began at the age of five and has only grown as she's followed music to all corners of the United States and around the world to places like Canada, China, and South Korea. Since her arrival at the University of Michigan, where she is completing her graduate studies, Hanna has immersed herself in every type of music, including genres such as classical, contemporary, folk, and jazz. Some of her pivotal musical experiences include performing with members of the Silk Road Ensemble, teaching young children through outreach programs for at-risk youth, busking in town squares, traveling internationally with various classical ensembles, and touring with a Beatles tribute band. Constantly seeking opportunities to share music with all sorts of people, Hanna finds joy in every variety of music-making.
Ivan Suminski is a first-year master’s student at the University of Michigan, where he studies with Professor Aaron Berofsky. Previously, he attended the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester, where he earned two degrees in Violin Performance and Mechanical Engineering. A Michigan native, Ivan grew up in Traverse City
where he was a founding member of the TSO Civic Chamber Strings ensemble, as
well as their honors string quartet program, with whom he took home first prize
at the Shar String Quartet Competition in 2014. Ivan's love of chamber
music began at an early age, playing piano trios at home with his mom and
brother. While in school, Ivan has pursued this passion, and has played
in masterclasses with the Brentano, Danish, Jupiter, Calidore, and Ying
Quartets. Locally, he is an active member of the Dearborn Symphony, as
well as a substitute player with the Michigan Philharmonic Orchestra and the
Traverse Symphony Orchestra.
Praised as a “rock solid pianist” by the Straits Times, Jingjing
Wan has performed as soloist with orchestras such as the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Orchestra and Singapore Metropolitan Orchestra. She won the second prize in the Singapore National Piano Competition; second prize in Ars Nova International Piano Competition; third prize in the Yamaha Europe Scholarship Piano Competition, UK region; and, second prize in MTNA National Piano Competition, Michigan States. Festival appearances include fellowship in the Aspen Music Festival in United States and, invited and performed in the Encuentro Music Festival in Spain. Jingjing holds a Bachelor and Master Degree in Piano Performance from the Royal College of Music, London. She is a now a full scholarship student of the Master in Chamber Music at the University of Michigan, under the tutelage of Professor Christopher Harding. Jingjing has also worked with world-class pianists such as Michel Beroff, Boris Berman, Dmitry Alexeev, Veda Kaplinsky, Hung-Kuan Chen, and Arie Vardi.
Cameron Zandieh, a native of Long Island, New York, began his Suzuki violin training with Ms. Marilyn Smith at the C.W. Post campus of the Long Island University at the age of four, where he also participated in group classes, music theory education, chamber music and orchestral training. In September 2008, Cameron commenced his training with Ms. Ekaterina Gerson at the School for Strings in Manhattan. He advanced very quickly, taking on repertoire such as Zigeunerweisen, Max Bruch Violin Concerto #1, and several other works by composers such as Wieniawski, Sarasate, Mozart, Bach and Kreisler. In the meantime, he was a very active participant in the music program’s orchestra and chamber music activities. Cameron was accepted to the Juilliard School’s Precollege Division in May 2012 as a student of Dr. Ann Setzer. His weekly routine consisted of commuting to Manhattan twice a week for his private lessons, as well as theory, ear-training, composition, and other elective classes, in addition to orchestra and chamber music rehearsals. He has performed frequently as soloist and principal, as well as in various chamber ensembles, at many venues throughout New York City, Long Island, Upstate New York, and Connecticut, including Steinway Hall, Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium, Lincoln Center’s Bruno Walter Theater, the Helen Rice Recital Room, and the Juilliard School’s Paul Hall, Morse Hall, Peter J. Sharp Theater and Wilson Theater. Cameron has served as the Concertmaster of the Precollege Orchestra at the Juilliard School for two seasons, and was the winner of the Juilliard Precollege Violin Concerto Competition in May 2016. He is presently a violin performance major and a student of Aaron Berofsky at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
