BIRMINGHAM, Mich., March 5, 2019 – With help from a private/public partnership, the City has approved the redevelopment of two of the four existing baseball fields at Kenning Park, the site of Birmingham Little League (BLL) baseball since 1947. BLL provided a donation to the City which covers almost half of the $737,000 cost of the project, expected to begin in June of this year. Among the enhancements planned for the two easterly baseball fields are:

  • Installation of new fencing and concrete walkways from the parking lot and between the re-aligned fields;

  • Installation of new player benches as well as safety netting for added protection from foul balls;

  • Rotation of the fields as well as regrading of them to improve drainage, enhancing playing conditions and layout;

  • Scoreboards installed for the field users.

“The redevelopment of the two baseball fields at Kenning Park is another step in our ongoing work to reinvest in the existing infrastructure in the City’s parks,” said Lauren Wood, the City’s Director of Public Services that also oversees the City’s Parks and Recreation Division. “We are grateful for this partnership and longstanding relationship with Birmingham Little League and look forward to the improvements at two of the Kenning Park baseball fields later this summer.”

The project marks the second phase of enhancement work at Kenning Park, located at 2300 E. Lincoln. It also fulfills a vision put forth in the 2014 Kenning Park Concept Master Plan. Phase one work included reconstruction of a parking lot and landscape improvements along Lincoln. WCI Contractors, Inc. of Detroit, MI was the winning bidder for the Kenning Park baseball fields redevelopment project.
