What happens to trees when planted too deep or that have the grade changed around their trunks? How do you properly plant and maintain the trees on your property?

Bloomfield Township Public Library is pleased to welcome Certified Arborist Steve Turner on Wednesday, June 8 at 7 p.m. for a lecture titled “Making the Grade.” Mr. Turner will draw on his extensive knowledge of trees to discuss stem girdling roots, proper and improper planting techniques, over-mulching, how to identify problems and techniques for fixing them, and when to give up and replant. Following the lecture and weather permitting, attendees will also tour the Library grounds, which are home to over 20 species of trees from around the world.

Mr. Turner has been an arborist in the Metro Detroit area for over 30 years. He has taught Arboriculture, Tree Biomechanics, Plant Healthcare, and Tree Climbing at Oakland Community College. He is also a columnist for Michigan Gardener, writing the “Tree Tips” column for 25 years. He sits on the Board of Directors for ReLeaf Michigan, a nonprofit that works to educate the public about trees and does community tree plantings every spring and fall.

The lecture will take place in the Library’s Community Room. This event is free and open to all, with no registration required.
