Movies Under the Stars at the LBJ Ranch

Movies Under the Stars at the LBJ Ranch

Make plans to join Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park and Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site in celebrating the 109th anniversary of President Johnson’s birth.

The National Park Service will show the HBO film All the Way at dusk on the LBJ Ranch on August 26 as part of its “Movies Under the Stars” series. In All the Way, Bryan Cranston portrays President Johnson during his first year in office as he secures passage of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964. Robert Schenkkan, author of All the Way (both the play and movie screenplay), will introduce the movie at 7:30 pm, and provide insights into the making of the play and film. (All the Way is intended for adult audiences. Viewer discretion is advised. The film contains scenes and language that some viewers may find offensive.)

Robert Schenkkan is an accomplished writer of plays, screenplays, and television miniseries. He has earned Tony and Writer’s Guild of America awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and three Emmy nominations. His many writing credits include 17 plays, such as Building the Wall and The Great Society, and four episodes of the HBO miniseries The Pacific. He served as the 2013 Harry Middleton Lecturer at the LBJ Presidential Library. Western National Parks Association (WNPA) is sponsoring Robert Schenkkan’s visit to the park.

All the Way will begin about 8:00 pm, and will be presented free of charge on a large outdoor screen. Access to the LBJ Ranch begins at 6:30 pm. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and refreshments. In case of inclement weather, call 830-644-2396 for updates on possible postponement.

Celebration of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Birth

Celebration of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Birth

Make plans to join Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park and Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site in celebrating the 109th anniversary of President Johnson’s birth.

At 10:00 am on August 27 the National Park Service will host the annual wreathlaying ceremony at President Johnson’s gravesite on the anniversary of his birth. The ceremony continues a tradition that Lady Bird Johnson began in 1973. Brigadier General Heather L. Pringle, USAF, will help present the wreath and provide remarks. Pringle is the Commander of the 502nd Air Base Wing and Joint Base San Antonio. Robert Schenkkan, author of All the Way (both the play and movie screenplay), will be a featured speaker. Vocalist Megan (Schmidt) Miller will conclude with the singing of “America the Beautiful.”

Robert Schenkkan is an accomplished writer of plays, screenplays, and television miniseries. He has earned Tony and Writer’s Guild of America awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and three Emmy nominations. He served as the 2013 Harry Middleton Lecturer at the LBJ Presidential Library. Western National Parks Association (WNPA) is sponsoring Robert Schenkkan’s visit to the park.

Throughout the day the LBJ State Park will feature old-time games of marbles, tops, jacks, and stick horse races at the Sauer-Beckmann living history farm. Birthday cake will be served at 1:00 pm at the state park’s visitor center.

Access to the LBJ Ranch’s full driving tour will begin after the ceremony. In honor of President Johnson’s birthday, tours of the Texas White House will be free. Tours of the house will begin at 11:30 am. To view the ceremony, visitors should stop first at the LBJ State Park to pick up a free vehicle permit and map. SV Cultural Hub Monthly Potluck Day-of-Dinners

Sententia Vera Cultural Hub Potluck Day of Dinners in the Texas Hill Country

Bring to share your favorite cultural dish on Sunday!

In collaboration with several national nonprofit organizations, the #CulturalHub is happy to host monthly dinners to put "neighbor" back into neighborhood. After our initial Day of Dinners on June 25th, the overwhelming sentiment was to keep the community potluck dinners going.  So, on the last Sunday of the month, the Texas Hill Country will come together knowing we’re not perfect, not always on the same page, but knowing that we want to build something greater with our communities. We will come together to give freely of ourselves and to fight back against the narrative that silos us into us vs. them. We’re coming together to share and build -- in order to truly resist.

ABOUT Marsha Young
Marsha Young is a graduate of Southwest Texas State University with a commercial art degree. Her love for flowers and travel inspires her art.
