Clem Allison Retrospective

Tusculum College will re-open its Allison Gallery in a new location in January with a reception for J. Clement Allison. Allison, the gallery’s namesake, will be the new location’s first featured artist.

According to Wayne Thomas, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and associate professor of English, the gallery has been relocated to the Shulman Center on the eastern side of the college campus. “The new location is spectacular,” said Thomas, “And, we are excited to celebrate the re-opening with an exhibition from Clem Allison.”

The first show, a retrospective exhibition of Allison’s artwork over the course of his lifetime, will be available for viewing January 18 – February 15. There is no admission fee and the event is open to the public. Additionally, a closing reception will be held on Friday, Feb. 10, from 4-7 p.m.

The Allison Gallery, named in appreciation of J. Clement Allison’s three decades of exemplary commitment to Tusculum College, was created to provide a venue for a variety of artistic experience. To further this mission, the gallery hosts the exhibitions of local and regional artists as well as exhibitions by Tusculum College’s art students.

Artists of regional and national prominence are displayed year round, providing a unique and useful tool for the college community by allowing students, faculty and staff to view and experience art from across the country without leaving the Tusculum campus.

The residents of Tusculum, Greeneville and other surrounding communities also benefit from the opportunity, provided by the Allison Gallery, to access art from across the country at a local, easy to reach location. In fact, The Allison Gallery is the only art gallery in the Greene County area containing exhibitions from a wide array of both national and local artists and one of only a few such galleries in the region.

Flamenco Vivo/Carlota Santana

Flamenco Vivo/Carlota Santana

Poema de Andalucía is a journey through the cultural richness and traditions of the Andalusian provinces that form the “cradle of flamenco.”  Despite their proximity, many stylistic differences exist between the regions of southern Spain. The varied traditions, festivals and rituals of daily life reflect the special character of its people and have made the Andalusian region a wellspring of cultural heritage, not just for dance and song but for poetry, art and literature. Through the language of flamenco, this special ‘Poem’ pays tribute to the unique land and people of Andalucía.

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is the nation’s premier Spanish and flamenco dance company, known for the purity of its work and the unique way in which it enriches the art of flamenco. Flamenco Vivo actively encourages the creativity and innovation of young artists from both Spain and the U.S. while remaining faithful to its powerful traditions.

Annie Moses Band

Annie Moses Band

Warner Classics recording artist, the Annie Moses Band has been inspiring and entertaining audiences for over a decade, bringing their distinctive style of music across the U.S. and around the world. A captivating blend of folk and classical, the Annie Moses Band is a talented ensemble of songwriters, singers, musicians, and siblings combining technical skill with exhilarating showmanship.

The Art of the Love Song, the Annie Moses Band’s PBS special, is old-school elegance in the mold of Grace Kelly and Cary Grant. The band keeps a classical aesthetic in these archetypal love songs, while flavoring them with retro strings and gypsy-jazz violin. Nat King Cole’s velvet stringwork serves as a big inspiration as well. The ultra-creative members of the band pluck repertoire from the Great American Songbook of the 40’s and 50’s, then borrow from such soulful folk/rock songsmiths of the 60’s and 70’s as Don McLean, Paul Williams and John Lennon. The Art of the Love Song is a tribute to the most treasured love songs of the last century. Be swept off your feet with the romance of forever!
