SHU-DE! (Let's Go), Documentary Film

In 2011, Baltimore beat boxer and vocal percussionist Shodekeh met the Alash Ensemble, known for their Tuvan throat singing, a technique for singing two or more pitches simultaneously. Taking only a small knapsack, Shodekeh journeyed to Tuva to study their music and culture, while sharing his own vocal artistry, and filmmaker Michael Faulkner followed the beat boxer to document the intermingling of music and cultures. SHU-DE! – which is Tuvan for “let’s go” – presents viewers with a sensory experience of music and landscape through the vastness of Tuva and the human voice, revealing the sounds that unfold with collaboration. Mary B. Martin School of the Arts presents the documentary film SHU-DE! with director Faulkner as part of the South Arts Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers on Monday, October 17 at 7 p.m. in ETSU’s Martha Street Culp Auditorium. The screening is free and open to the public. A Q&A and reception with the filmmaker will follow the screening. For information, visit www.etsu.edu/martin or call 423-439-8587.

Julie Fowlis: Music of the Scottish Isles

A quiet torchbearer for her native tradition, Julie Fowlis is a multi-award winning Gaelic singer deeply influenced by her upbringing in the Outer Hebridean island of North Uist. With a career spanning 10 years and four studio albums, her “crystalline” and “intoxicating” vocals have enchanted audiences around the world. Mary B. Martin School of the Arts at East Tennessee State University will present Julie Fowlis: Music of the Scottish Isles on October 20 at 7:30 p.m. in ETSU’s Martha Street Culp Auditorium. An artist with a genuine curiosity to explore other traditions and natural ability to cross genres, Fowlis has collaborated, recorded and performed with artists such as violin virtuoso Nicola Benedetti, and acclaimed singers Aled Jones, Grammy-Award winning James Taylor and Mary Chapin Carpenter. She also recorded the theme song to Brave, Disney Pixar’s Oscar-, Golden Globe- and BAFTA-winning animated film, set in the ancient highlands of Scotland. “There are some voices that carry much more than a melody,” says the Evening Standard of London. “They transport you to another place, give you goose flesh and make magic out of thin air. Julie Fowlis has just such a voice.” For tickets or information, visit www.etsu.edu/martin or call 423-439-8587.

The Jason Bishop Show

The Jason Bishop Show

As America’s hottest illusionist, Jason Bishop might read your mind one second or make goldfish appear the next. Bishop, an international award-winning illusionist, was the youngest person to win the Magician’s Alliance of Eastern States Stage Award and one of the youngest people to compete in the Society of American Magicians World-Class competition. He was also named APCA’s Best Performing Artist of the Year.

Bishop’s interest in magic ran throughout his youth, truly taking shape in his mid-teens. In college Jason studied theatre and then went on the road performing at resorts and amusement parks, anywhere he could find an audience, including the street. As audiences enjoyed the show more and more, he altered his magic to become larger and more impressive.

The Jason Bishop Show now tours the most dynamic illusion and magic show in the U.S. The show currently features exclusive large illusions, award winning sleight of hand and “close-up” magic that is captured live and projected onto LCD screens for the audience to have a clear view of every detail. Bishop is currently the only illusionist in the U.S. to tour with the rare Double Levitation, Plasma illusion and Op-Art. His performance abilities have led him from L.A. to NYC and Mexico to Sweden, as well as every state and many countries in-between.

DocArt with Dr. Eric Avery

Dr. Eric Avery is a celebrated printmaker and recently retired physician who for decades has practiced medicine and art in tandem. His complexly layered work connects issues of printmaking and art history with social concerns of public health, human rights abuse and responses to HIV/AIDS, death, sexuality and the body. Creating powerful historical records of experience with patients, Avery changes the ordinary role of a doctor into an artist inspired by healing, fusing the space between art and medicine. Avery served as juror for ETSU’s fourth annual FL3TCH3R Exhibit of socially and politically engaged art – and will present a free and open artist talk, sponsored by the Mary B. Martin School of the Arts, on Thursday, October 27 at 5 p.m. in Rogers-Stout Hall 102, East Tennessee State University.
