Sawyer Brown

Sawyer Brown

With more than 4,500 shows, 23 albums, over 50 chart singles, and a number of CMA, ACM, and CMT awards behind them, Sawyer Brown has earned its place as one of the premier live acts in music.

Since the first time Sawyer Brown stepped foot onstage in the early 1980’s, and playing 275-300 nights a year for the first decade or more, the band has never come off the road. Tireless road warriors, Sawyer Brown thrives on playing live. The band’s live shows are legendary. Having been described as “the Rolling Stones of Country Music,” the band bounds on stage night after night.

Capturing moments that matter in a song is what the band has always tried to do. From the tentative moments of transition that underscore the evocative ballad “The Walk” to the moment that a guy realizes he just might have found the right girl in the energetic signature song “Some Girls Do,” the band consistently manages to bring life to those moments that all to often slip by unnoticed.

The Temptations

The Temptations

For more than fifty years, The Temptations have prospered, propelling popular music with a series of smash hits and sold-out performances throughout the world.

The Temptations began their musical life in Detroit in the early sixties and in 1964, the song “The Way You Do the Things You Do” turned the group into stars. An avalanche of hits followed with “My Girl,”  “Get Ready,” and “I Wish It Would Rain.” Through the 70’s and 80’s hits continued to burn with intensity. “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” and “Treat Her Like a Lady” still smolder today.

The current line-up consists of Otis Williams, the only remaining original member, Ron Tyson, Terry Weeks, Larry Braggs, and Willie Greene, Jr. After all these years, the Temps are still going strong. “The more we change,” says veteran Ron Tyson, “the more we stay true to ourselves. We’re about singing straight-up soul. It’s a style that will live on forever.” “Great singing,” says Otis,  “will always prevail.” And so the Temptations go on... and on... and on.

All proceeds from this performance benefit Takoma Regional Hospital Foundation.

SHU-DE! (Let's Go), Documentary Film

In 2011, Baltimore beat boxer and vocal percussionist Shodekeh met the Alash Ensemble, known for their Tuvan throat singing, a technique for singing two or more pitches simultaneously. Taking only a small knapsack, Shodekeh journeyed to Tuva to study their music and culture, while sharing his own vocal artistry, and filmmaker Michael Faulkner followed the beat boxer to document the intermingling of music and cultures. SHU-DE! – which is Tuvan for “let’s go” – presents viewers with a sensory experience of music and landscape through the vastness of Tuva and the human voice, revealing the sounds that unfold with collaboration. Julie Fowlis: Music of the Scottish Isles

A quiet torchbearer for her native tradition, Julie Fowlis is a multi-award winning Gaelic singer deeply influenced by her upbringing in the Outer Hebridean island of North Uist. With a career spanning 10 years and four studio albums, her “crystalline” and “intoxicating” vocals have enchanted audiences around the world. Mary B. Martin School of the Arts at East Tennessee State University will present Julie Fowlis: Music of the Scottish Isles on October 20 at 7:30 p.m. in ETSU’s Martha Street Culp Auditorium. An artist with a genuine curiosity to explore other traditions and natural ability to cross genres, Fowlis has collaborated, recorded and performed with artists such as violin virtuoso Nicola Benedetti, and acclaimed singers Aled Jones, Grammy-Award winning James Taylor and Mary Chapin Carpenter. She also recorded the theme song to Brave, Disney Pixar’s Oscar-, Golden Globe- and BAFTA-winning animated film, set in the ancient highlands of Scotland. “There are some voices that carry much more than a melody,” says the Evening Standard of London. “They transport you to another place, give you goose flesh and make magic out of thin air.
