Balsam Range at Niswonger Performing Arts Center

Balsam Range is a group of five outstanding acoustic musicians and singers from North Carolina. For their band name, they thoughtfully and respectfully adopted the name of a majestic range of mountains that surround part of their home county of Haywood, NC where the Smokies meet the Blue Ridge, the Balsam Range.

Adding to an already impressive list of awards and honors, the band received numerous top honors in the 2014 IBMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year. Balsam Range was also honored as Vocal Group of the Year. Buddy Melton was named Male Vocalist of the Year, and Tim Surrett received a Mentor Award.

Elements of jazz, country, gospel, swing, and old-time music are all infused into the fresh sound of this unique Southern band. It’s five distinct personalities creating one remarkable musical experience. NPAC welcomes the award-winning Balsam Range.

Moscow Festival Ballet-Sleeping Beauty at NPAC

Sleeping Beauty is often considered the finest achievement of the Classical ballet. It is a grandiose and refined blending of the traditional mime, expressive pas d’action and spectacular divertissements in a lavish theatrical setting. Performed by the Moscow Festival Ballet, Sleeping Beauty is a supreme demonstration of steel point work, sharply accented spinning turns, soaring leaps, high extensions, and daring lifts.

Princess Aurora, condemned at her christening by an evil fairy to prick her finger and die on her 16th birthday, is saved by the gift of the good Lilac Fairy, who declares the princess will only sleep until awakened by the kiss of a prince. This beautifully depicted fairy tale is replete with a king and queen, fairies both good and evil, a beautiful princess and dream prince, magical stage effects and courtly splendor.

A Moon for the Misbegotten at Niswonger Performing Arts

A Connecticut tenant farm in 1923. On this barren patch of earth, can two lost souls find hope under a lover’s moon? In Eugene’s O’Neill’s touching and heartbreaking classic, we are introduced to one of theater’s most important and complex female characters - Josie Hogan. A boisterous Irish woman with a quick tongue and a tarnished reputation, she’s had a hard and lonely life working the Tyrone farm with her bullying father.

When James Tyrone Jr’s mother dies, he returns to the farm to settle the estate and attempts to navigate his complicated relationship with Josie and her father. Tyrone is a tortured alcoholic on the edge of despair. Haunted by his past, he has drowned himself in self-pity and remorse. One night, under the autumn moon, he opens his heart to Josie. Sparks fly and hope is rekindled as two “misbegotten” souls come together. But as dawn breaks, is the saving grace of love enough to overcome a lifetime of disappointment?

A Moon for the Misbegotten was published in 1943 and has been produced five times on Broadway as well as by theaters world-wide.
