Calendar of Events

Throughout the month of February, an array of artwork from Milligan students will be on display in the exhibit “Art from the Buffalo School” at the Nelson Fine Art Center in downtown Johnson City. The show, now in its 14th year, features student paintings, drawings, photography, mixed media, and graphic design.

In celebration of Milligan’s 150^th anniversary, the symphony will feature the college’s Orchestra and Concert Choir. The concert repertoire will include Mozart’s “Overture to Marriage of Figaro,” Haydn’s “Te Deum for Maria Theresa,” Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3,” and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 4 in B-flat Major.” Free admission for Milligan students, faculty, and staff. All others: Adults, $35; seniors, $30; and non-Milligan students, $10.

Founded in Dallas, Texas in 1983 by Michael Levine, Dallas Brass has become one of America’s foremost musical ensembles. The group has established a unique blend of traditional brass instruments with a full complement of drums and percussion, which creates a performing entity of extraordinary range and musical challenges.

The Dallas Brass repertoire includes Classical masterpieces, Dixieland, Swing, Broadway, Hollywood, and Patriotic music. In addition to their solo engagements, Dallas Brass appears with symphony orchestras nationwide including the Cincinnati Pops, New York Pops, and the Philly Pops.

In a festive candlelit atmosphere, this cabaret-style event will feature vocal and instrumental music in the Valentine theme of love and romance combined with a delicious dessert buffet. Tickets for table seating are $15 each. Overflow seating is $10. To purchase, call 423.461.8723. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door.

Back by popular demand, we invite you to join us for an evening at our private cooking demonstration February 18, 2016 at 6:30pm at Olive Oil Divine.  The guest chef will be Chef Armond from "Label Restaurant" of downtown Johnson City.  Chef Armond will be preparing two dishes using Olive Oil Divine Extra Virgin Olive Oil.  Interact with Chef Armond and taste the prized dishes he teaches and prepares right in front of you!  Chef Armonds recipes for the evening will consist of:

• Caesar Salad Bites (Crisp Romaine Lettuce, Chef Armonds custom Caesar dressing and Crouton Bowl with Asiago Parmesan Cheese)
• Seared Thyme and Garlic Parmesan Chicken with Vegetable Risotto (Chicken Breast marinated in fresh chopped thyme, sea salt and cracked black pepper. Pan seared to perfection in an Olive Oil Divine Parmesan Infused EVOO and Roasted Garlic Fused Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Carrots, Portabello Mushrooms, Brussel sprouts, and Grape Tomatoes, sautéed and tossed with creamy Risotto and finished with white wine.

Sample size portions will be served to each participant.

Sample any or all of Olive Oil Divine oils & vinegars during this private event and make it a fun night out!

All participants will go home with sample bottles of some of the oils used for this presentation along with Chefs recipes for the evening.

Balsam Range is a group of five outstanding acoustic musicians and singers from North Carolina. For their band name, they thoughtfully and respectfully adopted the name of a majestic range of mountains that surround part of their home county of Haywood, NC where the Smokies meet the Blue Ridge, the Balsam Range.

Adding to an already impressive list of awards and honors, the band received numerous top honors in the 2014 IBMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year. Balsam Range was also honored as Vocal Group of the Year. Buddy Melton was named Male Vocalist of the Year, and Tim Surrett received a Mentor Award.

Elements of jazz, country, gospel, swing, and old-time music are all infused into the fresh sound of this unique Southern band. It’s five distinct personalities creating one remarkable musical experience. NPAC welcomes the award-winning Balsam Range.

Internationally-renown guitar virtuosi Douglas James and Pasquale Rucco will present a recital of music from the period of Milligan’s founding, in honor of the college’s sesquicentennial. Combining a historically-informed approach with world-class musicianship, they play exclusively on authentic 19th century guitars, giving the music all the charm and nuance of the bel canto era. The duo has now been performing together for over 20 years, delighting audiences throughout the world with their interpretations of music from the first true golden age of the guitar. This event is sponsored by the Milligan Arts Council.

Jennifer Pharr Davis is the owner and founder of Blue Ridge Hiking Company in Asheville, NC.  In 2011, she became the first woman to set the Overall Appalachian Trail Record, completing the 2181-mile trek in just 46 days and averaging nearly 47 miles per day.  This accomplishment was voted Ultrarunning Magazine’s Female Performance of 2011 and earned Davis recognition as a 2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year.  Her latest book, Called Again, chronicles this remarkable journey, and her adventures have been featured in The New York Times and The Washington Post and on NPR’s Talk of the Nation, CNN, and the CBS Early Show.
