Book Discussion“Letters of a Woman Homesteader”

The Lawton Arts & Humanities Council has chosen to discuss the theme, “The Journey Inward: Women’s Autobiography. This theme was developed with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The program, Let’s Talk About it, Oklahoma, is a discussion group that comes together for a five-part, scholar-led series. Each scholar opens the program, bringing the book to life, provoking the group’s curiosity with insights and raising questions that spark discussion. All book discussions are held at Cameron University Library every third Thursday of each month at 6pm. Visit https://www.lawtonok.gov/programs/lets-talk-about-it-oklahoma-program

About Elinore Pruitt Stewart - She was born Elinore Pruitt; June 3, 1876 in White Bead Hill, which was then a settlement in Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (now an abandoned township in Garvin County, Oklahoma (founded 1906). She was homesteader in Wyoming, and a memoirist who between 1909 and 1914 wrote letters describing her life there to a former employer in Denver, Colorado. Those letters, which reveal an adventurous, capable, and resourceful woman of lively intelligence, were published in two collections in 1914 and 1915. The first of those collections, Letters of a Woman Homesteader, was the basis of the 1979 movie Heartland.
