It’s been decades since Edgar Childs, better known as “Father Firefly,” brought his members of The Hell’s Gate purists to settle in Bonnie Claire, Nevada. Locals had always claimed the area was plagued by an “energy” powerful enough to drive a man insane, but they instantly rejected the outsiders’ claims to harness it, calling the Hell’s Gate purists an “unGodly cult.” After several failed attempts to force the purists out, the townspeople resorted to violence.
On Oct. 25, 1969, an unidentified group of residents stormed the Hell’s Gate house, and killed all 15 men, women and children inside. Perhaps it was the “energy” or their hatred that fueled their murderous rage. The bodies were burned, desecrated and scattered about the landscape. Three of the victims, including Father Firefly, were never found, and nobody was ever arrested or charged for the murders.
Fifty years later, investigators are asking the public for help to not only solve the gruesome murders of the Hell’s Gate Massacre, but also the cases of five women who have gone missing from Bonnie Claire in recent years. For the first time, members of the public are encouraged to walk through the Hell’s Gate house with hopes of
seeing what detectives may have missed. A fresh set of eyes might be able to see what happened to the family.
WARNING—
?? Bonnie Claire is located near several nuclear test sites. While residual radiation levels have been deemed “safe” in town, it’s recommended that time at the Hell’s Gate house be limited to 30 minutes to prevent harmful effects.
Those choosing to tour the house will be asked to fill out a waiver, absolving the BCPD of any liability. It’s encouraged all attendees travel in groups rather than alone, as many individuals have become lost or have disappeared looking for the house without a knowledgeable guide.
A one-time tour fee of $7 will be charged for all single attendees. Those traveling in pairs can obtain two passes for $10. Researchers planning multiple visits to the site will need to purchase an all-access pass for $15.
