DUNCAN, Okla. - Sandy Magrath: Dogs of the Southwest art exhibit will open May 1 - June 30, 2019, at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan, OK.

A meet the artist reception will be 3:30 - 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at the Heritage Center.

Magrath of Norman is inspired by the designs and colors of the Southwest, and by her dogs. She's painted dogs with personality and her work will be available to purchase through the Heritage Center.

"Most of my subjects are current or past personal companions that will live forever in my heart. I love all animals, but have a crazy love for dogs," she said. Magrath is an advocate for adopting dogs from animal shelters.

Magrath, a Norman native, graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She moved to Texas in 1987 and 10 years later, started Texas Autosports with her husband. In 2011, they sold the business, traveled the country in a motorhome, before settling down in Norman. She’s started a new career as an artist and creates happy dog portraits using colorful acrylic paints and large canvases.

An Australian Shepherd, named Scooter, was her first subject and she adopted him from a shelter.

“He had lots of personality and one bum eye, but I painted him with two good eyes because I didn’t want anyone to think I was a bad painter. He was a great dog.” she said.
