Class Description: This basic course is taught according to The American Association of Woodturners, Inc. “Woodturning Basic” manual. The other two courses are inclusive of the above manual and thence directed according to the needs of the class participants.

Location: The class is held at Adrian Sturdivant’s Studio at 224 Bay Park Drive, Brandon MS 39047. Bay Park Subdivision is the first subdivision on the Rankin County side of the Reservoir.

Featuring the designs of PaperSnipz

Two days of classes making delicate Easter Egg heirlooms! For both beginners and experienced paper cutters. Everything needed for materials will be yours to keep. Plus, create a Bonus Project on Day 2!

Times:  1:30-4:00 (both days)

Class Fee: $40 per day OR $75 for both days.
(Minimum of 3 students to hold class; Maximum limit of 12 students)

Additional Fee for Materials: Pay separately to instructor upon arrival your first day (Cash or check, please.)

NOTE: If attending ONE class, your materials, instruction & cost will be for ONLY Day 1.

Day 1- Create a collection of eggs-cellent designs! Use 3 original springtime PaperSnipz templates. Also, learn to how to make Springtime silhouettes from photos. (Bring your favorite garden magazines to share or use mine.)

Materials provided: 3 PaperSnipz patterns, sharp scissors, mechanical pencil, plastic sheet protectors, & papers: pastels parchment, black silhouette, tracing, graphite, fadeless tissue

Day 2- Finish your eggs-citing paper cuttings and mount designs from Day 1 onto delicate tissue paper. Then, blowout REAL EGGS on which to decoupage your artwork and create Easter Egg Trees. (Bring your own tree branch or use one of mine.)

Bonus project- Create a tissue paper Bunny Banner!

Materials provided: 4 raw jumbo eggs, ribbon, craft brush, glitter glue, craft glue, can of spray adhesive, colored fadeless tissue paper, styro egg carton

Goodwill Art Show Awards Ceremony and Reception

 

Goodwill Industries Volunteer Services and the Madison Square Center for the Arts are hosting the 27th Annual Goodwill Art Show Awards Ceremony and Reception on Sunday, March 22, 2015 at 2:00 p.m., to be held at the Madison Square Center for the Arts.  The exhibit runs from March 6 through March 22.  The Goodwill Art Show is an annual art exhibit which celebrates the creative flair, diversity, and expression of artists with disabilities in Mississippi.  The event is free to all.  Artworks will be available for purchase.

Jackson Area Alumnae Panhellenic Association

The Jackson Area Alumnae Panhellenic Association, JAAPA, is hosting the 2015 Athena Luncheon Wednesday, March 25, at 11:30 a.m. at Manship Restaurant in the Belhaven Building, 1200 North State Street, across from Baptist Hospital. The luncheon will honor local Panhellenic members with the Athena Awards, award the 2015 JAAPA scholarship, and present this years philanthropy Make-A-Wish with a donation.

The Athena Awards are given out for two categories for Service to Community and Service to Sorority. Local alumni group was asked to submit nominations of a women who embodies each award. Our biggest undertaking each year is our Philanthropic Fund Raiser. This year JAAPA hosted a raffle to raise money for Make-A-Wish and provide the scholarship
awarded to a sorority collegian at Millsaps College. The 2015 JAAPA Scholarship will be presented to Faith Chamness the current Panhellenic President at Millsaps College. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and served as the delegate to Millsaps Panhellenic for the past two years. We hope you will mark your calendars to attend.

J.A.A.P.A. is affiliated with the National Panhellenic conference and offers sorority women a chance to meet each other and become involved in social, educational and philanthropic endeavors. This is a great way to maintain the bonds of sisterhood that you started in college with members of your own sorority, as well as members of other NPC fraternities. Currently, there are fourteen alumnae groups involved with JAAPA in the Jackson, MS Metro Area.

A Day of Quilting

A Day of Quilting
Come join us at the Craftsmen's Guild of Mississippi on March 28 for a day of quilting. From beginners to masters, we'll have a whole range of quilters on hand, and we'd love to see your smiling faces!

This event will have:

Quilters from half a dozen or more local groups who will be demonstrating everything from cutting and piecing to quilting and binding.

We also have a hand quilter who will have her floor frame set up along with the machine quilters.

We'll have several make-and-take tables for people to try their hand at some quick projects, including a project from the Pine Belt Quilters from Hattiesburg.

(Anyone who would like to join in is welcome to bring their own project and sewing machine and sew along with us. There will be plenty of quilters available to answer any questions and give any suggestions or guidance requested.)


This event is presented in the spirit of the old fashioned quilting bees, where the community gathered and worked together to complete quilts, catch up on news of each other and maybe learn a new technique or skill in the process.

Please join us for a few minutes or all day. We promise it will be a riot (of color!)

Would you like to advance your skill in mosaic design? Join us for a three day class in which students will create a mosaic flower pot. This class will be a fun way to take your experience with mosaic design to the next level by creating a colorful 3-dimensional project for the garden. Time: Tuesday Evenings, 7-9 PM, 10 weeks

Dates: Starts March 31, 2015

Class Fee: Ten weeks, $195, includes use of all equipment and supplies for first project. Pre-registration & payment necessary & subject to equipment availability.

Learn to weave!  Instruction will guide you step-by-step through the process to plan and weave a sash/scarf.  You will select yarns, prepare and dress the loom, weave and finish your piece.  All materials and equipment to complete your project will be provided.  You will also receive a full-color instruction manual; “Beginning Weaving, the Very first Project” by Marcy F. Petrini.

Learn to Spin!  Using a flyer spinning wheel, you will learn to draft fiber, spin yarn, ply your yarn and adjust the spinning wheel.  All fiber and equipment will be provided.  You will also receive a full-color instruction manual; “Start Spinning on a Flyer Wheel” by Marcy F. Petrini.

Weaving and spinning classes are held concurrently and are co-taught by Marcy Petrini and Kathy Perito, both Exhibiting Members of the Craftsmen’s Guild. Marcy is the current columnist for Right from the Start, published in the fiber quarterly, Shuttle Spindle & Dyepot and she has taught classes for the Craftsmen’s Guild since 1981.

The City of Ridgeland Department of Recreation & Parks and Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi will host KidFest! Ridgeland for four days over two weekends (April 3-4 and April 11-12). As always KidFest! Ridgeland will feature a variety of shows, interactive activities and lots of other attractions which are all included in the price of admission.
Admission is $12 at the gate, but coupons for $2/guest savings off the regular admission price are available at www.kidfestridgeland.com . All performances, activities and attractions are included in the admission price. For children younger than two, admission is free.

KidFest! Ridgeland has been named a Family Favorite by Parents & Kids Magazine and was recently named “Top Twenty Event” by the Southeast Tourism Society.
