The West Michigan Tour de Cure is a cycling event available for participants of all skill levels- with 3 SAG supported routes ranging from the 10 mile family ride to the 62 mile metric century ride along with an exciting 2.5 Mile walk route for those who would rather walk than ride.  Either way, we are with you every mile of the way, with rest stops fully stocked with food and fans to support you! The celebration doesn't end once your ride is complete! Join us for a post-ride festival filled with delicious food, sponsor giveaways, live entertainment, kids activities and more- all to celebrate our Red Riders/Striders (riders/striders with type 1 or type 2 diabetes)!

OUR TOWN Art Show and Sale

The 32nd  Annual OUR TOWN Art Show and Sale will take place October 19-22, at The Community House, 380 South Bates Street, Birmingham. The juried, all media art show provides a forum for Michigan artists to display and sell their work.

 

This year’s event will showcase 357 pieces of artwork from 142 Michigan artists. The art exhibition includes paintings, pastels, sculptures, glassworks, fiber works, photography, jewelry and mixed media. Thirty-five percent of the proceeds from the art sales will be used to fund The Community House children’s and adult’s programs and services.

 

“Caroline and I are honored and excited to be the Chairs of the 2017 OUR TOWN Art Show and Sale. The Community House is home to many charities, adult workshops and children’s classes.  It provides the perfect venue to showcase our artists (both local and statewide) with quality, juried artwork that is displayed professionally for our cultured community to experience. OUR TOWN is celebrating 32 years of art and photography at The Community House and we invite everyone to come and spend some time with the art and artists of our beloved area. It's ‘Our Kind of Town!’ said Robert Dempster, Co-Chair of the OUR TOWN Art Show and Sale.

OUR TOWN kicks off with an Opening Night Party, 6-9 p.m. Thursday October 19. The evening includes artists’ recognition reception, strolling hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, live entertainment, and the first opportunity to preview and purchase art. In addition, this year’s event will feature a silent auction and luxury raffle with mobile bidding. Friend tickets, with admission at 6:00 p.m., are $75. Benefactor tickets, with admission at 5:30 p.m. start at $250.

Following the Opening Night Party, the Show will be open to the public, free of charge from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, October 20 and 21; 10 a.m.–noon on Sunday, October, 22. 

 

The 2017 OUR TOWN Art Show and Sale Co-Chairs are Caroline Rooney-Dempster and Robert Dempster. Benefactor Co-Chairs are Carla Grava and Pamela Rossiter. The Show was juried by Barbara Heller and Weatherly Stroh.

 

The event is presented by The DeRoy Testamentary Foundation. Other sponsors include The Michigan Design Center, Armina Interiors, Detroit Home Magazine and 90.9 WRCJ.

Community House Presents Bates Street Trick or Treat

The Community House, 380 South Bates Street, Birmingham, will host the “Bates Street Trick or Treat” on Monday, October 30, 6 to 8 p.m. offering an evening of family-friendly Halloween fun. 

 

The event, designed for children ages 3 to 10, features craft projects such as “Spooky Halloween Slime” along with  plenty of Halloween themed games from  “Mummy Bowling,”  to “Witchy Ring Toss” and “Pumpkin Chuckin’.”  Attendees will also be treated to “Spooktacular Cartoons,” a “Hall of Frights” and a “Haunted Treat Trail.” 

“Halloween is an exciting time for so many of our youngest patrons,” said Danny DeRose, Senior Director of Programs and Enrichment for The Community House.  “We created Bates Street Trick-or-Treat to give families in the area a safe and fun filled evening right here in downtown Birmingham.”

The Community House Presents “SIP”

Birmingham, MI—On Saturday, November 4, The Community House will host “SIP,” a unique event celebrating the marriage of fantastic cuisine and outstanding wines. SIP engages the Michigan restaurant and wine community where exceptional area Chefs and Sommeliers team up to provide food and wine perfection. The event serves as the signature fundraiser for The Community House, a nonprofit resource serving Metro Detroit for nearly 94 years. 

 

The evening begins at 6:00 p.m. with a private cocktail and hors d’oeuvre reception for patrons.   General admission begins at 6:30 p.m. SIP will showcase small plate stations by some of the area's best restaurants including The Stand, Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse, Tallulah, Prime 29, Eddie Merlot’s, Roast, Bistro 82 and The Community House.

 

Madeline Triffon, Master Sommelier and SIP’s official food and beverage consultant, will masterfully pair small plate selections with wines, cocktails and beer to create a collaboration that will heighten the dining experience.

A wine and food-centric silent auction will give SIP attendees an opportunity to bid on wine and food related auction experiences, wine lots, baskets and more.        

The evening will conclude with an afterglow party, the ZIM’S Vodka After Hours “Wine-Down,” from 10:00 p.m. to midnight. The party will feature late night bites, dancing and ZIM’S Vodka signature cocktails.

 

New to this year’s event, The Community House is inaugurating an exciting new beverage scholarship fund and scholarships will be made available to cover the fees for the Introductory Course or Certified Examination administered by the Court of Master Sommeliers Americas.
