Gardening experts will share top trends and tips at English Gardens annual Garden Party on Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2. Breakfast of Champions with Joyce Jenereaux

Oakland County, MI –With the world whirling at warped speed most days, how does a leader keep up and stay relevant? Reinvention is the key word when it comes to personal and business success. Perhaps no one knows that challenge better than Joyce Jenereaux, former publisher and president of the Detroit Free Press and Michigan.com. She will be the speaker at the Leadership Oakland Breakfast of Champions.

 

Joyce successfully navigated the digital revolution to transform the traditional newspaper to meet the needs of today’s hyper-connected society. Recently retired and on to new ventures, she’ll share the leadership and business lessons she learned along the way. Joyce will also talk about how reinvention is shaping this next phase of her life.

 

The breakfast will be held on Tuesday, April 4 at the MSU Management Education Center, 811 W. Square Lake Road in Troy, MI.  The breakfast series has built a reputation for solid content, engaging speakers, excellent networking, and a tasty breakfast. The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. and Joyce Jenereaux will speak at 8:00 a.m. The cost is $36 for the general public and $32 for Leadership Oakland Alumni Association members. Japanese Art in the Afternoon

The Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center (BBAC) will host its second annual Japanese Art in the Afternoon, with support from the Japan Business Society of Detroit Foundation, a free, all-ages workshop featuring Japanese-themed art activities and celebration of the annual Cherry Blossom Festival.

The community event will include multiple interactive and hands-on art activities and demonstrations, including koto musicians (“koto” is a traditional Japanese stringed instrument), Japanese calligraphy, woodcuts and origami, plus other Japanese-related projects suitable for all ages.

"The Revenge of Analog" Bauder Lecture

Join the Center for Collections and Research for its inaugural Bauder Lecture with award winning author, David Sax. This free lecture will explore a topic deeply embedded in Cranbrook’s DNA -- the value of real, physical things, even in today’s digital age. Sax’s talk will be accompanied by a conversation with Center Director Gregory Wittkopp and followed by a reception and book signing in Cranbrook Schools’ historic Page Hall. 


Copies of David Sax’s book, “The Revenge of Analog: Real Things and Why They Matter”, will be available for purchase at the lecture and in advance through the Center for Collections and Research. 

The lecture will take place in Cranbrook Schools’ Performing Arts Center (PAC), located at 550 Lone Pine Road, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304.

Eye Wear Trunk Show to Support Penrickton Center

On Wednesday April 12th from 8 am -7 pm Clavenna Vision Institute of Birmingham will be hosting our 7th annual Trunk Show to benefit the Penrickton Center for Blind Children. Penrickton Center is a private, non-profit five day residential and day care agency serving blind, multi-disabled children ages 1-12. No fees are ever charged to families at Penrickton Center, and all financial support is raised from individuals, service clubs, businesses, and foundations. The Trunk Show will include eyewear from Lanvin, Carrera, Nina Ricci, Police, Vera Wang, Lilly Pulitzer, Penguin, Kate Spade, Fossil, Hugo Boss and more. A percentage of the proceeds of eyeglasses purchased on April 12th will go directly to Penrickton.

Birmingham, MI--The Community House is proud to announce CultureTalks, an intimate lecture series featuring cultural mavericks from Southeast Michigan. Speakers will discuss their role and connection to our community.  Be it the region’s thriving classical music scene, the history of the 1967 Detroit riots, or the prominence of the Detroit Institute of Arts, CultureTalks showcases those who are shaping arts and culture in our region. 

“The series is a culmination of the outstanding arts and cultural institutions surrounding us here at The Community House,” said Danny DeRose, Director of Programs and Enrichment. “We are thrilled to welcome these leaders and performers and look forward to cultivating a strong relationship with each of them.”

Our Spring The Flagstar Strand TheatreBenefit Concert is brand new for 2017! Join us for an acoustic benefit show with  Phillip Phillips “American Idol” winner and pop recording superstar and special guest Brian Vander Ark (of The Verve Pipe) who opens the show at the historic and newly renovated Flagstar Strand Theatre in downtown Pontiac on April 27!

A portion of the proceeds from our Spring Benefit Concert will be directed to our Critical Needs Fund and help conquer barriers not solved by traditional housing programs, such as security deposits, bus transportation to look for an apartment or simple furnishings and cleaning supplies for the new home. Many times, these barriers are the only thing preventing a family or individual from securing successful, independent housing.

The President’s Advisory Council of The Community House Host

The President’s Advisory Council (PAC), a supported group of The Community House, will host Birmingham Downs on Saturday, May 6, 5-9 p.m. at the Community House, 380 S. Bates St., Birmingham. 

 

This fun and festive Kentucky Derby event will be held at The Community House and will include strolling food stations, beer, wine and cocktails, live entertainment, the running of the 143rd Kentucky Derby on the big screen, a silent auction and a charitable contribution to the mission of our 94-year old non-profit serving the community.

 

 “I am really excited about Birmingham Downs this year on Derby Day,” said Jeff Bagalis, co-Chair of the PAC. “This amazing event will be a great opportunity to network while enjoying the Kentucky Derby on the big screen with great cocktails, appetizers and live music. So come out and enjoy a wonderful evening, all to benefit The Community House, its programs, and the local nonprofit groups that rely on The Community House for support. I couldn't think of a better way to spend an evening for such a great cause!”
