Redbrook HarvestFest

Join the A.D. Makepeace Company and Old Colony YMCA in celebrating the start of the cranberry harvest at the fourth annual Redbrook HarvestFest on Saturday, September 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The free event will feature scenic wagon rides through the Redbrook community to the adjacent cranberry bogs, for a demonstration of the water harvest and the loading of the cranberries into trucks for delivery to Ocean Spray.  Guests can also learn about dry harvesting and try harvesting berries with an antique scoop.

HarvestFest was founded as a way to introduce neighbors to the cranberry harvest in a fun and educational setting.

The Old Colony YMCA will offer a variety of children's activities including a fall craft table, lawn games, their famous ball pit, healthy eating demonstrations, and membership specials for the South Plymouth Old Colony YMCA at Redbrook opening later this year.

Visitors can paddle a rental kayak on the nearby reservoir to view the cranberry harvest, and the new homes at Redbrook will be open for tours.

Sample cranberry products at the Ocean Spray booth, take a guided nature walk with MassAudubon, shop a variety of vendors, enjoy complimentary face painting by Art on the Spot, watch the birds of prey demonstration, listen to music, and much more.

Admission and parking are free, held rain or shine, some activities may have fees.

For directions and to learn more about the Redbrook community, visit www.RedbrookPlymouth.com.

The event is sponsored by the A.D. Makepeace Company, the world’s largest cranberry grower.

Deborah Cramer Book Talk and Signing

Deborah Cramer Book Talk and Signing

In her award-winning book The Narrow Edge: A Tiny Bird, An Ancient Crab, and an Epic Journey, Deborah Cramer accompanies small sandpipers - Red Knots - on their extraordinary migration between the southern tip of South America and their Arctic nesting grounds.  Both the knots and the horseshoe crabs whose tiny eggs fuel the birds’ extraordinary migration appear on the South Shore, and ornithologists living and working here have brought this inspiring story to light.

The Narrow Edge received the 2016 Rachel Carson Book Award from the Society of Environmental Journalists, and the 2016 Best Book Award from the National Academies of Science.

Join Deborah at the Spire Theater on September 27, 2017 to follow the inspiring journey of the birds, and to explore how the lives of shorebirds, horseshoe crabs and humans are intertwined.  Book signing to follow.

Cramer’s appearance is free courtesy of the sponsorship of three local environmental organizations: The Living Observatory, The Herring Pond Watershed Association, and the Southeastern Massachusetts Pine Barrens Alliance.
