Special History Presentation at the National Monument to the
The Department of Conservation and Recreation will present a special program on Sunday, November 15 at 2:00pm about the Pilgrims and the monumental sculpture that commemorates their ideals. With Thanksgiving fast approaching what better way to celebrate than to learn about the National Monument to the Forefathers, a little-known treasure high atop a hill overlooking Plymouth Harbor. The 81-foot tall granite work was designed by Boston architect Hammatt Billings in the late 1800s and is the largest free standing granite monument in the United States. The central figure of Faith is surrounded by Liberty, Law, Morality and Education, which represent the principles of the Founding Fathers. Learn about the Pilgrims’ experience and the meaning behind the art and sculpture that adorns the monolith.
This program is free and open to the public and will meet in front of the statue at 70 Allerton Street, Plymouth. All children (17 and under) must be accompanied by an adult. Program will run approximately 45minutes to an hour and will be outside. Sunscreen, water bottle, good shoes and appropriate outerwear for the day’s weather are recommended. Rain or snow will cancel. Reasonable accommodations are available upon advance request. Call (508) 747-5360 for more information.
