First Community Bank would like to invite everyone to come and join us for two very special Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies to open branches at the two newest Jonesboro Piggy Bank locations-Nettleton STEAM and Valley View. The ceremonies will be held on Wednesday February 20th-10AM for the Nettleton STEAM School and 1:30PM for Valley View. First Community Bank encourages everyone who can to please come and support Jonesboro’s young savers along with the Jonesboro Regional Chamber of Commerce goodwill ambassadors.
Last year, First Community Bank started the Piggy Bank program with the University Heights and Fox Meadows schools in an effort to teach children the importance of saving. This year they are expanding the outreach of the program to the new Nettleton STEAM School and Valley View Public Schools. Northwestern Mutual’s 2018 Planning & Progress Study found that money is the leading cause of stress among Americans, and First Community Bank believes that by educating children about money early, it can save them from experiencing some of this stress later in life.
According to First Community Bank’s Jonesboro community president, Allen Williams, “As bankers in the Jonesboro area, it is both our obligation and our privilege to teach useful saving techniques
to future generations so that they may grow and thrive in the years to come.”
As before, bank employees will work closely with the 4th grade teachers to facilitate in-class financial literacy lessons once a week for the duration of the school year. The objective is to enable children to make financial choices with confidence and guide them in managing their money effectively. The lessons center on differentiating needs and wants, setting attainable long and short-term goals, and how to make and follow a budget.
The Piggy Bank functions much like any other bank, where First Community’s employees take student deposits, assist them in filling out their slips, and help them maintain a record of their deposits. Setting the foundation and the framework for good saving is the ultimate goal according to Gabe Roberts, assistant vice president of lending and Piggy Bank volunteer: “It isn’t about the dollar amount, but about getting children in the right mindset and envisioning what they want to achieve in the future.”...
