The United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore (UWLES) is celebrating 75 years of serving all communities in Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties.

A few fun facts about UWLES:

  • They were established in 1944 by six local community leaders and were first known as The Community Chest of Wicomico County
  • Today, their Board of Directors is comprised of 35 local leaders from all four Lower Shore counties
  • They first supported seven partners (and now 40!) including several who have been with them since the beginning
  • Engaging with individual donors through workplace giving started in the 1940’s and remains the strong base by which they help one in three neighbors every year

Please join us to celebrate the collective impact of the past 75 years and to:

  • Learn more about United Way’s work today.

2020 Southern Delmarva Economic Forecast

On Friday, December 6, 2019, the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce and BEACON at Salisbury University will present the 2020 Southern Delmarva Economic Forecast at Salisbury University, in the Wicomico Room of the Guerreri Academic Commons. Registration and breakfast begin at 7:30 a.m. to be followed by the Eastern Shore Delegation Luncheon at 12:30 p.m.

The event is an unparalleled opportunity to hear first-hand what leading regional economists and business leaders believe to be the biggest achievements and challenges ahead. The Chamber's Annual Economic Forecast has been designed to help Delmarva businesses and the community plan for expected economic conditions within the future year ahead. Experts from around the Eastern Shore will gather to analyze the current challenges facing the regional, national and global economy.

The 2020 keynote speaker will be Dr. Dustin Chambers, Scholar-in-Residence, BEACON at Salisbury University, and Professor of Economics, Franklin P. Perdue School of Business.

In addition to his work at SU, Dr. Chambers is a Senior Affiliated Scholar for the Mercatus Center at George Mason University and a Policy Advisor at the Heartland Institute. Dr. Chambers is an applied econometrician who has published widely on the topics of income inequality, poverty, and economic growth. His most recent research, about which he testified before the US Senate, focuses on the regressive effects of government regulations, including their unintended impact on consumer prices, entrepreneurship, and social mobility vis-a-vis income inequality and poverty.

Following the Forecast, the Eastern Shore Delegation Luncheon features the entire Lower Shore Legislative Delegation and their thoughts on what will be the “hot button” issues for the upcoming Maryland General Assembly session. The panel has a moderator overseeing the Q & A.

Full event registration is $75 for members and $100 for future members.

To register or for information on becoming a sponsor, visit www.salisburyarea.com or contact LeVita Bragdon at 410-749-0144 or lbragdon@salisburyarea.com.
