U.S. Kennels, Inc. provides trained service dogs and supplies, to combat wounded veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries and affiliated physical disabilities.

The program provides FREE support to veterans while also giving shelter dogs another chance at life. Each dog is rescued, rehabilitated, trained in advanced obedience, and advanced medical tasks, then matched with a veteran based on their personality and disability.

Veteran’s lives are greatly improved with the medical assistance and the healing power of their new canine partner.

U.S. Kennels Inc. is saving veterans, one paw at a time.

Aging Into Medicare class

If you are getting ready to turn 65 in the next 6 months or will be going on Medicare soon, MAC’s new class, “Aging Into Medicare,” is for you!

Discussion will include how Medicare works, what it covers and when to apply. The free classes will be presented by MAC’s State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) staff, and are open to anyone who wishes to attend. Classes will be repeated on a regular basis.

The next class will be held Thursday, Aug. 29, from 6-8 p.m.

Basics of Breastfeading

This 2-hour class will prepare parents for a great breastfeeding experience. Please feel free to bring a support person with you. Studies show that breastfeeding is more successful when Mom has loving, knowledgeable support. Come and learn the basics of breastfeeding, proper positioning of baby, how to avoid common problems, and how to pump and store milk. Videos help to demonstrate the proper techniques for successful nursing. Pre-registration and payment is required. You do not have to bring anything to this class.

Registration for this class ends one week prior to the class date.

Join Us for September General Membership Luncheon with 
Lori Brewster, Chief Health Officer, Wicomico County Health Department

 

Mrs. Brewster earned a Bachelor of Science from Salisbury University and a Master of Science in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing from the University of Maryland. She worked as a registered nurse at Eastern Shore Hospital Center, New Beginnings, Peninsula Regional Medical Center and Choptank Adolescent Mental Health Treatment Center before joining the Wicomico County Health Department in 1991.

Mrs. Brewster was selected as the county’s first Deputy Health Officer in 2002 and became acting health officer in 2007. In April 2008, she was officially appointed as Wicomico County’s Health Officer by the Secretary of Health and the Wicomico County Executive. In July, 2018 she was appointed as the Acting Health Officer of Somerset County Health Department and officially appointed by the Secretary of Health in December 2018.

Mrs. Brewster is a certified advanced practice nurse in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing and is a License Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor. She has received numerous awards for her work in Public Health. She serves on numerous boards and commissions.

As Health Officer, Mrs. Brewster is responsible for oversight and management of public health programs, assessment, planning and monitoring of services.

Pemberton 24 - Festival of 5Ks

How many 5Ks can you run in 24 hours? Find out at the Pemberton 24 - Festival of 5Ks, a new event that will be held from Friday-Saturday, Sept. 20-21. A  5K will start every hour on the hour for 24 hours. Runners can complete up to a total of 75 miles.

The first 5K begins at 7 p.m. Friday, and the grounds open at 4 p.m. that day. 

This event is a partnership between Wicomico County Recreation, Parks & Tourism and Algonquin Ultras Inc.

Participants are invited to run as many 5Ks as they like, whether it's one, five or all 24.

The course will be a 5K trail run at Pemberton Park. Camping will be available. Tents only; no electricity provided. There will also be a festival atmosphere, with food vendors, beer and music.

Runners can compete as individuals or as part of a four-person team.

The deadline to guarantee a shirt, upgrade to a long-sleeved shirt or reserve a camping spot is Aug. 31.

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

The Neonatal Resuscitation skills class costs $105.00 and includes a book. It will be held from 8-10 a.m. The class requires prerequisite modules by the AAP. To complete those before the skills class, please follow these steps:

If you are an individual purchaser of the NRP Online Examination, 7th Edition, you will access the online exam by visiting www.aap.org/nrp. From this site, you can create an account in the NRP 7th Edition Exam delivery site, provided by HealthStream. At this site, you will purchase access to the exam and complete it online.

1. Visit www.aap.org/nrp.

2. Click the NRP LMS Login under the Quick Links on the right of the screen.

3. If you are a previous user, enter your user ID and password on the left of the screen.

4. First time students choose “Create a user ID and password” on the right of the screen. The create an account screen will appear.

5. In the Institution drop-down menu, select 1 – Self Registration. The page will refresh and display additional fields.

6. Complete the fields on this page. Fields with an orange asterisk are required.

7. Click Submit. You are logged in to the HealthStream Express site. Follow the steps that appear on the screen to complete the exam.

Exam Rules and Policies:

Remember that the general rules and policies of the NRP Exam apply to you as an individual purchaser. Review the NRP Exam Rules and Policies section of this guide for more information.

Please bring a copy of your verification form that states you passed the required modules to skills class in order to meet the requirements for completion and obtaining an NRP card.
