Youth Environmental Action Summit (YEAS)

 

The Ward Museum and NOAA's Environmental Science Training Center are hosting a brand new initiative on the Lower Eastern Shore to empower young people to take action on local environmental issues. The Youth Environmental Action Summit (YEAS) will bring together 150 students from Wicomico, Worcester, and Somerset counties on April 5, 2019. During this youth conference students will present their ideas for action and compete for funding to implement their environmental projects right here in the community.

YEAS invites all types of student groups to submit proposals for action and to participate in the summit. Groups may consist of classes, after-school programs, community groups, homeschool programs, scouts troops, faith-based groups, and beyond. Proposals for action projects are due by March 15, 2019. Specific requirements are listed on the summit website at http://www.yeasummit.org.

Public Safety Forum

The Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce presents the First Annual Wicomico County Public Safety Forum and Luncheon, presented by the Pohanka Automotive Group, on Thursday April 11, 2019 at 11:30AM at  Dove Pointe in Salisbury Maryland. The forum will feature area Chiefs of Police, Fire Department officials, the Wicomico office of the States Attorney and the Wicomico County Sherriff. This panel of public safety officials will discuss the state of the regions public safety conditions, resources, trends, and answer questions on a variety of related topics. This is a not to be missed forum for business leaders and citizens. Tickets are just $25.00 for Chamber members and $35.00 for non-members which includes a full luncheon. Chesapeake Visual Icons

The area surrounding the Chesapeake Bay has a distinct visual appeal that is centered on the iconic images of the Bay, its people, and the incredibly diverse bounty of both the water and land. From the arch of the Bay Bridge rising over the Chesapeake to the Ward Brothers in their workshop, this exhibit features historical pictures that have shaped the wider understanding of the Chesapeake. Paired with the historical images, contemporary photographers will display works that feature the Chesapeake through both cultural and environmental perspectives, offering a powerful sense of where we have been and where we are.

Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay will be honoring Melodie Carter, Vice President of Business Development at Hebron Savings Bank as the 2019 Lower Shore Woman of Distinction. The Event Co-chairs are Susan Purnell and Ashley Bosche. 

Each year the event celebrates a woman who has made a difference in her community, inspired others, and provided a positive role model for girls and women. The event also provides an excellent educational and leadership development opportunity for teen Girl Scouts to learn important presentation and networking skills as they interact with local business leaders.

Sponsorship opportunities are available and all funds raised will support local Girl Scout Leadership Programs.

9th Annual Art in Nature Photo Festival

Throughout the weekend, photographers of all skill levels are invited to participate in seminars and workshops offered by a selection of the region’s top nature photographers. Additionally, photographers are encouraged to enter their photos in one of the competitions three levels: professional, amateur, or youth.

 Entries are judged Saturday evening on basis of originality/uniqueness, creativity, content, composition, and photographic quality. All decisions made by the judges are final. Mail- Ins will be accepted July 1, 2019 through August 9, 2019. Walk-ins are welcomed August 9 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m
